share to Mary. Express, in standard form, the total amount that Barry and Carlos give to Mary as a fraction of
the $120. [May 18/P1R]
3. The original price of each 6-day ski pass is reduced by 15% in sale.
In the sale the price of each 6-day ski pass is $272.
(a) Calculate the original price of each 6-day ski pass.
The price of each 3-day ski pass is £110. The exchange rate is £1 = $1.70.
(b) Calculate how much Andrew will save by buying one 6-day pass in the sale rather than two 3-day ski
passes. [Jan 19/P2]
4. In 2017, a supermarket bought 20 000 oranges at a cost price of US $0.65 each. All the oranges were
sold for a selling price of US $0.80 each.
(a) Calculate the total profit, in US $, the supermarket made by selling all the oranges.
(b) In 2018, the supermarket bought 𝑛 oranges at a cost price for each orange that was 20% less than the
Cost price for each orange in 2017. All the oranges were sold for a selling price for each orange that was
12.5% less than the selling price for each orange in 2017. In 2018, the total profit the supermarket made by
selling all 𝑛 oranges was US $ 4500. Find the value of 𝑛. [Jan 19/P2R]
5. Zahur made 250 cakes to sell at a cake sale. Of the cakes made by Zahur, 28% were chocolate cakes.
(a) Calculate the number of chocolate cakes made by Zahur.
All the other cakes made by Zahur were either lemon cakes or vanilla cakes. The ratio of the number of
lemon cakes to the number of vanilla cakes was 4: 5.
(b) Calculate the number of lemon cakes made by Zahur.
Zahur puts icing on each of the vanilla cakes he made. The icing for each vanilla cake needed 75 g of icing sugar.
(c) Calculate the total amount, in kg, of icing sugar needed for all the vanilla cakes made by Zahur.

At the start of the cake sale, the selling price of each of the cakes made by Zahur was $4 and he sold 204 cakes
at this price. Zahur then reduced the selling price of each cake by 30% and he sold all the remaining cakes.
(d) Calculate the total amount of money, in $, that Zahur received by selling 250 cakes.
When Zahur had subtracted the cost of all the ingredients he needed to make his cakes from the total
amount of money he received by selling all the cakes, he found that he had made a profit of 60%.
(e) Calculate, in $, the cost of all the ingredients Zahur needed. [May 18/P2R]
6. On Monday a shopkeeper bought 200 pineapples. Each pineapple cost US $0.60. By Wednesday, the
shopkeeper had sold 120 of these pineapples. The selling price of each of the 120 pineapples was such that
he made a profit of 50% on each pineapple.
(a) Calculate the selling price of each of these 120 pineapples.
On Thursday, the shopkeeper lowered the selling price of the pineapples and sold the remaining 80
pineapples. The selling price of each of the 80 remaining pineapples was such that he made a total profit of
20% in selling all 200 pineapples.
(b) Calculate the selling price of each of these 80 pineapples. [May 17/P2]
7. A shopkeeper pays a total of $570 to buy 300 identical items. The shopkeeper sells 200 of these items.
The selling price of each of these 200 items is such that the shopkeeper makes a profit of 20% on what he
paid for each item. The shopkeeper then reduces this selling price by 25% and he sells the remaining 100
items at this reduced price.
Calculate the total profit made by the shopkeeper in selling all 300 items. [Jan 17/P2]

10. A coach was hired for a student trip to Paris from London. The hire cost was £1008 and this cost was to
be divided equally between all the students travelling on this trip. Let 𝑥 be the number of students who
originally planned to go on this trip.
(a) Write down, in terms of 𝑥, an expression for the original cost, in £, per student.
Six students were unable to go on the trip. The total hire cost had then to be divided equally between the
remaining students.
(b) Write down, in terms of 𝑥, an expression for the new cost, in £, per student.
As a consequence of the six students being unable to go on the trip, the cost per student increased by £4.00.
(c) Write down an equation in terms of 𝑥, and show that it simplifies to 𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 − 1512 = 0.
(d) Solve the quadratic equation in part (c) to find the number of students who originally planned to go on
the trip. [Jan 04/P2]
