SEBA Naming Standards - How To Combine Abbreviations

The document provides standards for naming data points in building automation systems. It explains that point names are built from generic to specific terms using camel case abbreviations. Modifiers should be added as suffixes rather than prefixes. The name should uniquely identify the unit/asset, system, device, action/measurement, and attribute/parameter levels from left to right. Examples are given to illustrate the naming conventions.

How to combine individual abbreviations into full point names

Location Measurement Property / Property /
Parameter 1 Parameter 2

Fcu1_ Oa Dpr Pos Spt Min

• If a Unit/Asset is defined, this is the only time an underscore separator is used. This is reserved
for when more than one piece of equipment is being controlled inside the same controller,
otherwise this would be inherited from the parent folder/device name.
• Point names are built from generic-to-specific, system-to-parameter.
• Append modifiers as suffixes. Instead of MaxOaDprPos, use OaDprPosMax. This also ensures
similar points reside next to each other alphabetically in the Workstation.
• Any abbreviation can be suffixed with a number to differentiate multiples. Ct1Fan, CtFan2, and
Ct1Fan2 are all valid point names.
• It is not required to populate every possible level of naming. Some will be simple combinations of
just two abbreviations.
• Combine the camel-case abbreviations into final point name.
