LSGI 2224 Geo-reference Systems Test Guide

1. The test is an open book exam for the course LSGI 2224 Geo-reference systems- Phase Test. Students must submit their answers in Word format before 11:40 AM by the deadline. 2. The exam contains 6 questions to choose from, with the first question containing two parts (a) and (b). Students are asked to explain methods to measure the flattening of the Earth and calculate potential differences and height values between two normal height systems. 3. Students are asked to calculate distances and azimuths between points in 2D coordinate systems, estimate transformation parameters between two conformal coordinate systems, and solve for coordinates of a point using distance and angle measurements.

LSGI 2224 Geo-reference systems- Phase Test

(select FIVE questions to answer from SIX given)

Notice

1. The test starts at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:20 AM

2. You need to stop writing at 11:20 AM. Then you need to take photos of your examination
answer book, and put into a word file, write down your name and student ID on the first page of
your word file. Clear indicate the question numbers in the answer book.
3. Submit your examination paper (word format) before 11:40. The system will shut down at 11:40
AM through blackboard assessment directory: phase test.
4. This is an open book examination; you can use any references during the examination.
5. You are required to take the examination individually and switch on your video during the
examination period.
6. You are not allowed to take phone calls during the examination period.
1. a) Find a way to measure the flattening of the earth. You need to explain your method clearly, and
use diagrams if needed. (10)
b) At a point A, the mean normal gravity from quasigeoid to the point is 9.792 m/s 2, the normal
heights for two systems are 3.41 m and 3.92 m respectively, calculate the potential differences
between the datums of the two normal height systems. If there is another point B, the mean normal
gravity from quasigeoid to the point is 9.822 m/s 2, the height in system 1 is 10.1 m, calculate the
height of point B in system 2. (10)

2. a) Give point A and B in a 2D conformal coordinate system A(2, 3) and B(4,6), Calculate the distance
of AB and the azimuth of line AB (10)
b) Give a point A in a 2D conformal coordinate system A(5, 7), the distance of AB=8, and the azimuth
of line AB s=45 degrees, calculate the coordinates of B(x, y). (10)

3. There are two 2D conformal coordinate systems A and B, the orientations are the same. Give the
following two points P1 and P2 in system A and B respectively, estimate the scale and
transformation parameters for the transformation from systems A to system B. (20)
The coordinates of P1 and P2 in system A are: P1A(2, 3), P2A(5, 7)
The coordinates of P1 and P2 in system B are: P1B(6.4, 6.6), P2B (10.0,11.4)

4. a) Give you the coordinates of point P1 and P2 (as shown in the following figure), explain how to
solve for the coordinate of P(X,Y), using the measurement D1 and angle A1, and indicate where you
apply the solutions of the first and second geodetic problems. (10)

b) Define and Compare the local geodetic system and

the local graphic system. (10)

5. a) Explain how you can measure astronomic

latitude an d astronomic longitude. (10)
b) Prove two equipotential surfaces are not parallel to
each other (10)

6. At a point A(22O North, 114O east), the defection of vertical is 2” and 3” in north and east directions
respectively. The azimuth of line AB is 30 O, and the horizontal distance AB = 15 m. Calculate the
geoid undulation difference between AB, and disturbing potential difference. The normal gravity
values at points A and B can be approximately the same with the value of 9.789 m/s2. (20)
