COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Communication Skills

Communication is very important part of everyone’s life as this is the

basic to conquer any battle. One can not grow in life without a good
communication skill so if you are not as good as expected then you
need to work on several fundamentals which are given below.

How to Express Yourself & Your Ideas?

Are you fed up with struggling to express your thoughts and

opinions? These days, people want to talk and not listen! No one
wants to be a shadow in the crowd. Having your thoughts and
opinions heard is a priority.

Running Title of Presentation 9 of 78

Communication Skills

Five Techniques of Expressing Yourself & Your Thoughts

1) Know what your aim is

Make sure that before attempting to open your mouth and the words begin to
flow that your 100% clear on the ideas that need to be expressed. Knowing
where you want to go with the conversation will help to give you that extra
confidence boost.

Communication Skills

When your audience can see that you are confident then they will
more alert and want to listen.

Communication Skills

2) Ignore the definition of perfection

Just sit and ask yourself, exactly what is perfect? Is there anyone out there that is
100% perfect? The fact is that we are only human and not one of us is without
flaw. A small error is acceptable; there's no need to be stringent to the point that
you begin to struggle voicing your opinion! As long as you know the topic of
importance, a simple error can be overlooked.

Running Title of Presentation 12 of 78

Communication Skills

3) Keep it basic

Think about why you sometimes shut off when someone is voicing their opinion;
remember your days at school and college with teachers lecturing in front of the
class. Being lectured is boring!

Running Title of Presentation 13 of 78

Communication Skills

There really is no need to use big words. The simple facts voiced in an exciting
manner will be more than enough to keep the audience tuned in. It's extremely
annoying to have someone chatting away for 30 minutes when the conversation
could have been kept basic and ended in half the time.

Stay on the straight and narrow; turning left and right really is not going to turn
into a success story. Don't make the listeners fall asleep!

Running Title of Presentation 14 of 78

Communication Skills

4) Pretend that you are alone

One of the major fears of having to express your opinion in front of a crowd is
how you will be perceived by the audience. Can you really afford to let negativity
like this get in the way?!

Running Title of Presentation 15 of 78

Communication Skills

Picture that you are alone and voicing your opinion to yourself! Your nerves will
remain calm and allow you to remain focused on the topic that you need to
address.

Running Title of Presentation 16 of 78

Communication Skills

5) Revise before you talk

Simple revision of your conversation will help you take it to the next level. The
fact that you are confident and know what you are talking about will help
significantly.

Nine Ways to Start the Conversation with Anyone

Running Title of Presentation 18 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

"What's up with this weather?" and "How 'bout them [insert local sports
team]?" are as bad as cheesy pick-up lines when it comes to starting a
conversation. Avoid tired topics. Every situation is unique, so you should be able
to find a unique conversation starter.

Running Title of Presentation 19 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask for their opinion

Everyone has one! For someone you don't know well, start with light subjects
like the food, the music, the atmosphere, etc. "Do you like your Margaritas with
salt or without? Do you watch horror movies? Do you like this song?" It's
probably best to stay away from really sticky subjects like politics unless you
already know the person very well.

Running Title of Presentation 20 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask for their advice or recommendations

This works very well when commenting on someone's outfit or accessories, as

in "What a great tie! Where did you get it?" or on the food, as in, "Everything
looks good.What are you having?"

Running Title of Presentation 21 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask them a question

that's easy to answer. This is great when you know or find out that a
person has expertise in a particular field. If you're talking to your
company's IT guy, for example, you could ask him whether he's the guy
who installs hardware or software. But avoid asking anyone to explain
something super complex or involved; if that's where the conversation
leads, great, but asking a really complicated question up front can feel
demanding.
Running Title of Presentation 22 of 78
Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Comment on the environment

No matter where you are, there are things to comment on: the music, the food,
the lights, the guests, and so on. Even if you are stuck in an elevator with
someone, you can comment on the music, the speed, the crowdedness, etc.

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask for an update

If you know someone a little or know them by reputation, ask for an update on
something you know they've been doing, for example, "Oh, Mary mentioned you
were taking swing dance classes. How's that going?"

Running Title of Presentation 24 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask open-ended questions whenever possible

If your question can be answered with a simple

yes or no, don't be surprised if that's what you get.
Having follow-up questions ready can also help
the conversation flow. If you are asking what kind
of food they're having, for example, you might
follow up with, "That sounds good.
Running Title of Presentation 25 of 78
Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask open-ended questions whenever possible

Do you know what kind of wine would go well with that?" Almost
everything can be followed up with, "Why?" (Just don't ask it too many
times and end up sounding like a three-year-old!)

Running Title of Presentation 26 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask a hypothetical question

These can be great conversation starters, but try

to tie them into something happening at the
event or in current events to avoid seeming too
random. You might say something like, "I just saw
this movie where all the laws were revoked for
one day. What would you do if there were no
laws for a day?"

Communication Skills - How to Talk to Anyone?

Ask about their kids, pets, or hobbies

People love to talk about the things that are important to them. If you know that
your boss loves to sail, asking him about his latest trip is a surefire way to get
him talking.

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

1. Practice and Prepare

Review the typical job interview questions employers ask and practice your
answers. Strong answers are those that are specific but concise, drawing on
concrete examples that highlight your skills and back up your resume. Your
answers should also emphasize the skills that are most important to the
employer and relevant to the position. Be sure to review the job listing, make a
list of the requirements, and match them to your experience.

Running Title of Presentation 41 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

Also, have a list of your own questions to ask the employer ready. In almost
every interview, you’ll be asked if you have any questions for the interviewer. It is
important to have at least one or two questions prepared in order to
demonstrate your interest in the organization. Otherwise, you might come
across as apathetic, which is a major turnoff for hiring managers..

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

2. Develop a Connection With the Interviewer

In addition to indicating what you know about the company, you should also try
to develop a connection with your interviewer. Know the interviewer's name,
and use it during the job interview. (If you're not sure of the name, call and ask
prior to the interview. And, listen very carefully during introductions. If you’re
prone to forgetting names, jot it down somewhere discreet, like in small letters
at the bottom of your notepad.)

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

3. Research the Company, and Show What You Know

Do your homework and research the employer and the industry, so you are
ready for the interview question, "What do you know about this company?" If
this question is not asked, you should try to demonstrate what you know about
the company on your own.

Running Title of Presentation 44 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

You can do this by tying what you’ve learned about the company into your
responses. For example, you might say, “I noticed that when you implemented a
new software system last year, your customer satisfaction ratings improved
dramatically. I am well-versed in the latest technologies from my experience with
developing software at ABC, and appreciate a company who strives to be a
leader in its industry.”

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

4. Get Ready Ahead of Time

Don't wait until the last minute to pick out an interview outfit, print extra copies
of your resume, or find a notepad and pen. Have one good interview outfit ready,
so you can interview on short notice without having to worry about what to
wear. When you have an interview lined up, get everything ready the night
before.

Running Title of Presentation 46 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

Not only will planning out everything (from what shoes you will wear, to how
you’ll style your hair, to what time you will leave and how you’ll get there) buy
you time in the morning, it can help reduce job search anxiety, and it will also
save you from having to make decisions, which means you can use that brain
power for your interview.

Running Title of Presentation 47 of 78

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

Make sure your interview attire is neat, tidy, and appropriate for the type of firm
you are interviewing with. Bring a nice portfolio with extra copies of your
resume. Include a pen and paper for note-taking.

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

5. Be on Time (That Means Early)

Be on time for the interview. On time means five to ten minutes early. If need be,
drive to the interview location ahead of time so you know exactly where you
are going and how long it will take to get there. Take into account the time of
your interview so you can adjust for local traffic patterns at that time. Give
yourself a few extra minutes to visit the restroom, check your outfit, and calm
your nerves.

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

6.Try to Stay Calm

During the job interview, try to relax and stay as calm as possible. Remember
that your body language says as much about you as your answers to the
questions. Proper preparation will allow you to exude confidence.

Communication Skills - How to Win Interviews?

As you answer questions, maintain eye contact with the interviewer. Be sure to
pay attention to the question so that you don’t forget it, and listen to the entire
question (using active listening) before you answer, so you know exactly what
the interviewer is asking. Avoid cutting off the interviewer at all costs, especially
when he or she is asking questions. If you need to take a moment to think about
your answer, that’s totally fine

7. Follow-Up After the Interview

Always follow up with a thank-you note reiterating your interest in the position.
You can also include any details you may have forgotten to mention during your
interview. If you interview with multiple people from the same company, send
each one a personal note. Send your thank-you email within 24 hours of your
interview.

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

In this digital age, conversation is fast becoming a lost art. Yet, face-to-face
interactions are as important as ever. When you can engage in interesting
conversation with ease, people not only see you as personable and approachable,
but you may end up making a lasting connection that will help your career.

“In order to develop meaningful relationships you have to start somewhere,”

Bernardo J. Carducci, a professor of psychology and director of the Shyness
Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast, told The Venture. “Every big
business deal, every wonderful romance, starts with a conversation.”

Follow these golden rules from Carducci and other experts, and you’ll be on
your way to having more memorable conversations in no time.

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

First, Say Something

It may seem like making small talk comes more naturally to some than others,
but that’s a myth. According to Carducci, whose book The Pocket Guide to
Making Successful Small Talk arms readers with conversational know-how, “Being
a good conversationalist is a skill you practice.”

Running Title of Presentation 70 of 78

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

Prepare a Catchy Intro

Now that you’ve initiated the conversation, the next thing to do is to introduce
yourself, says Carducci. But don’t just give a short intro. Instead, prepare
something that includes a fun tidbit about your work or hobbies to help move
the conversation along.

Running Title of Presentation 71 of 78

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

Go Fishing

Next in Carducci’s formula is to fish for topics. If you’re at a work conference,

for instance, you might explain what brought you there and ask the person
you’re chatting with the same. If your conversation partner throws out other
topics, be sure to respond with questions or comments, Carducci says. Then you
can build on those.

Running Title of Presentation 72 of 78

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

Remember the 5 Ws (and How)

As with personal introductions, it’s hard to keep a conversation going when

someone’s offering up only short answers. To avoid this, try asking open-ended
questions, says Georgia Public Broadcasting host Celeste Headlee in her 2015
TED Talk,

Running Title of Presentation 73 of 78

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

“Start your questions with who, what, when, where, why or how,” she explains in
her talk. “Let them describe it. Try asking them things like, ‘What was that like?’
‘How did that feel?’ Because then they might have to stop for a moment and
think about it, and you're going to get a much more interesting response

Running Title of Presentation 74 of 78

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

Wrap It Up

When the time comes for your chat to end, let the person know you have to go,
and show appreciation for the conversation. Then show you were listening by
summarizing some of the major points from your talk. For example, “Thanks for
the recommendation on that Korean restaurant. I'm going to make it a point to
go next time I’m in the area.”

Communication Skills - How To Become A Great Conversationalist?

Be Present

When conversing, “Don't multitask,” Be present. Be in that moment. Don't think

about your argument you had with your boss. Don't think about what you're
going to have for dinner.”

Finally, set the stage for future conversations. Exchange business cards and let
them know you’ll be in touch- and then actually follow up. That’s how new
relationships develop.
