DIY Wooden Rack Project Guide

This document describes the project of making a wooden rack. The objective was for engineering students to build a rack to store daily items. It describes the history of racks dating back to the 18th century. Details are provided on the parts, construction process, costs, and applications. The rack was made of plywood and measured 2 feet by 1.5 feet with multiple sections to store items. Nails and wood glue were used to assemble the frame and sections. The rack can be used in kitchens, by students, and shops to store various household goods.

Objective:
As a student of mechanical engineer, objective of our
project is that we make a wooden rack in which we can place our
daily life things and things which we use daily so that we can put
them in this wooden rack and can pickup when require for use.
History:
It is believed that the very first racking was invented in the
18th century by some enterprising [Link] himself built the
simplest wooden structure for the hold of a long range ship, in order
to place the cargo in it more safely and compactly.
Introduction:
Using plywood we made a wooden rack of 2 feet
length and 1.5 feet height. We made two sections from [Link] the
left, there are three sections more and on the right of half section,
there are same three sections of same dimension on converse
direction.
Parts:
Wooden rack is made by joining the same wood parts. For
frame we joined four wooden parts of two horizontaly same
dimension and two vertically same direction so it comes in a box.
Then place another one woodpart of same vertical dimension at half
section and one wood part horizontaly of same parallel dimension.
And then joined two wooden parts at left and right of half to make
more two sections at half on converse direction.

Procedure:
Firstly we bought plywood (Vimboared sheets) from
wooden shop. Then we cutt the sheets by hand saw and made three
sheets of same dimension and three sheets of same dimension but
less dimension than first three sheets. We placed three small sheets
horizontally and three vertically and then joined them and half lap
joint is used at middle .
We also make two small sheets of same dimension by cutting the
sheets by hand saw for making sections on left and right side of
wooden rack
After cutting the sheets in desired dimension, we used
a hand wood planner for smoothing the sheets for finishing the outer
surface. We put these sheets in benchvice and then performed
smoothing operation by hand planner. Then to join these sheets
according to given model, we used temporary and permanent
fasteners.

 Temporary Fastener:
Polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glue (wood glue)
 Permanent Fastener:
Nails

Temporary fasteners are used along with permanent fasteners for more
stability. We first joined the wooden parts by temporary fastener (Polyvinyl
acetate glue ) and then when glue became dry then we used nails to joined
tightly all the parts. After joining all the wooden parts we again used hand
planner for final smoothing from all sides.
Table of Cost:

Applications:
 We can use this wooden rack in kitchen so that
we can put kitchen items in it.
 This is very usefull for students as they can
store their stationary items in it.
 We can place household items like decoration
pieces , crokery items , shoes etc in it.
 This wooden rack is most usefull in market
shops as all things in shops are placed in it.
