Painting Analysis
Painting is a form of art that depicts both easy yet difficult type of art to associate and
combine with the others and the basic elements of the arts. Art is mysterious yet expressive,
therefore, any form of art is a masterpiece especially that it is attached with strong emotions or
feelings from the artist.
And so, as what I’ve seen in the painting, there are two children in a winter street.
Although, they two are alone, the buildings and the trees made it looked like all occupied. The
lines used on the painting are expressed as a form of painting strokes and architectural design
where it created an illusion of a strong and depths of form shown in the painting. Although, even
if the line techniques were not that clear and evident on my view, I could still perfectly decipher
the concise application of stokes like the contour and some hatching or painting stroke
techniques used to form a 3D like effect on the stacks on the street sides, and creates a shades on
the building’s wall while it also emphasizes form and design of the building’s structure and
shades in the sky with the help of color techniques.
And as of the color, the painting uses warm tones where it also depicts home and
welcoming feeling that even if the picture clearly emphasizes the cold winter as the two children
are wearing big winter coats and the is now stacks shown on the street side. Also, the paintings’
values were decreased on some point and the intensity of colors used on the building’s walls was
also toned down. Hence, the painting uses cold tones where the colors blue and violet on the
buildings window and on the street side’s, exhibits the icy and cold temperature as what the
painting conveys. Therefore, the painting combines two complementary colors, primarily the red
and blue colors to promote the overall feeling that the painting wants to express by adjusting the
intensity, tone, values to emphasize color hues’ : the icy cold temperature of the environment,
and the homey, and cozy welcoming atmosphere, and that also even if its winter, there is still a
hit of sun rays that illuminated in the sky that added to the effect of a cold yet comfortable street.
On the other hand, the painting uses both the geometric and natural shapes as what I’ve
seen on the painting. From the cars, the architectural paints of buildings clearly show that the
artist is also a cubist as I’ve also seen more cube form designs from the wall blocks to the
terraces, stairs and windows than the curve designs on the window sill. These designs are
obviously engineered that is why it is a form of a geometric shape. While the trees, the snow
stacks and snow floors, and the sky are a form of an organic shapes as was also offered by the
nature.
Furthermore, as to what I have observed, the painting’s texture was an example of an
implied texture which were mostly manmade for almost all of the images shown except for the
trees. The wall blocks are an example of a manmade or engineered texture where you can see
how it was made or designed piece by piece. Even the snow stack’s form on the street sides were
like manmade despite of its natural element because of the snow’s uniform placement on the side
where the only snow floor removed was only on the center. Therefore, it is considered as a
manmade texture where you can clearly see its synthetic structure. However, on the trees, you
can just immediately imagine its natural body forms and structure because of the way the artist
placed or highlighted the branches and the body of the trees as what it naturally is.
Moreover, the paintings perspective shows as an example of a linear perspective. The
buildings and the trees are aligned to meet at a certain parallel line point that created an illusion
of a semi-narrow or regular street of a town or village where buildings are placed subsequently
aligned in a parallel space to which it also created a depth of space and measures the distance of
space and lines asymptotically.
The overall message I understand and interpret with this painting is that these two kids are
a symbol of connection, camaraderie, and expression of love. That even if two things are
opposite or don’t meet, the cold environment uphold the warmth and comfortable feeling of
home strengthens when you are together with someone special.
