Answer the following:

A. Rewrite the following measurement readings using unit prefixes.

1. 17 000 000 m = 17 Mm 6. 0.00244 g = 2.44mg
2. 0.000 005 s = 5 μs 7. 2 349 m/s = 2.349km/ s
3. 0.000 000 004 120 g = 4.12ng 8. 0.000 08 g = 80 μg
4. 2 349 000 000 000 s = 2.349Ts 9. 3 000 m = 300 000cm
5. 522 L = 0.522k L 10. 0.000 000 000 01 s = 10 ps

B. Fill in the blanks. Express your answers in the standard form of scientific notation.
1. 4.75 mL = 4.75x10-3 L = 4.75x10-6kL
2. 7.11 Mm = 7.11x106 m = 7.11x1012 μm
3. 5.12 μs = 5.12x10-6 s = 5.12x10-15Gs
4. 4.08 × 103 pg = 4.08x10-9 g = 4.08x10-11hg
5. 45.08 Ts = 4.508x1013 s = 4.508x1019ms

C. Provide a complete solution to each problem.

1. Azelastine hydrochloride is an antihistamine nasal spray. A standard-size container holds one
fluid ounce (oz) of the liquid. You are searching for this medication in a European drugstore and
are asked how many milliliters (mL) there are in one fluid ounce. Using the following conversion
factors, determine the number of milliliters in a volume of one fluid ounce: 1 gallon (gal) = 128
oz, 3.785 ×10−3 cubic meters(m3 ) = 1 gal, and 1 mL = 10-6 m3.

1 gal
volume=1 oz × =7.81×10−3 gal
128 oz

−3 3.785 ×10−3 m 3 −5 3
7.81 ×10 gal × =2.97 ×10 m
1 gal

1 mL
2.97 ×10−5 m 3 × =29.7 mL
10−6 m 3

2. Suppose a man’s scalp hair grows at a rate of 0.35 mm per day. What is this growth in (a)
nanometers per hour? (b) inches per year? (c) feet per century?

a. nanometer per hour

0.35 mm → nm (1 mm = 0.001 m; 1 m = 1,000,000,000 nm)

0.001 m
0.35 mm × =0.00035m
1 mm

1,000,000,000 nm
0.00035 m× =350,000 nm
1m

1 day → hour (1 day = 24 hour)

24 hours
1 day × =24 hour
1 day

350,000 nm
=14,583.33 nm per hour
24 hour

b. inches per year

0.35 mm → inches (1 mm = 0.0393700787 inch)

0.039370078 inch
0.35 nmm × =0.0138 inch
1 mm

1 day → year (1 day = 0.002739726027 year)

0.002739726027 year
1 day × =0.002739726027 year
1 day

0.0138inch
=5.037 inches per year
0.002739726027 year

c. feet per century

0.35 mm → inches (1 mm = 0.0032808399 feet)

0.0032808399 feet
0.35 nmm × =0.1148 feet
1mm
1 day → year (1 day = 0.0000274 century)

0.0000274 century
1 day × =0.0000274 century
1 day

0.1148 feet
=41.90 feet per century
0.0000274 century

3. Two hot-air balloons are 54.2 and 66.0 m above the ground. A person in the lower balloon
observes that the other balloon is 12.2° above the horizontal. What is the horizontal distance
between the two balloons?

side opposite θ y
tanθ= =
side adjacent θ x

y=66 m−54.2m=11.8 m

11.8m
tan12.2 °=
