Measles Pathophysiology

Measles is transmitted through droplets from the nose and throat of infected individuals. The measles virus infects epithelial cells in the respiratory tract and multiplies. It then extends to nearby lymph nodes through the lymphatic system. There is an incubation period of 1-10 days, followed by a prodrome period with fever and malaise. Koplik's spots then appear in the mouth, followed by a maculopapular rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body over several days.
