Art Appreciation: Let's Work On This

This document provides answers to questions about deriving meaning from art, how improvisation contributes to art, why artists appropriate other artworks, and the different forms of forgery. It also provides instructions to research an appropriation artist, discuss one of their artworks that appropriated an existing work, and answer whether art appropriation is a form of forgery. As an example, it discusses Marcel Duchamp appropriating the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci in his work. It argues that appropriation is not forgery because appropriation transforms the original while forgery only copies to deceive.

Art Appreciation
Module 10
Let’s Work on This
To check your understanding of the lesson, answer the following questions:

1. What are the important things the viewer or audience must consider to derived
meaning from the artwork?
Answer:
Art is a style of communication in its broadest terms. It has whatever meaning the
artist wants it to have, and that meaning is affected by the materials, practices, and
forms it employs, as well as the thoughts and emotions it evokes in its audience.
The methods of the medium, the context in which it was produced, and the
artist's purpose, if known, are the most important things a viewer must keep in mind
when deriving meaning from art. Through tradition, artists create a variety of techniques
with specific interpretations.
2. How can improvisation contribute to the distinctive quality of the artwork?
Answer:
Improvisation is broadly defined as spontaneous, unplanned, or otherwise
unrestricted creativity. Although an artist's ability to produce these effects may be
extremely skilled and educated, improvisation in the arts emphasizes imagination,
immediacy, innovation, and spontaneity as part of its product and activity.
3. What is the reason why artists appropriate art?
Answer:
Appropriation in art is rarely a sign of thievery or disrespect for authorship, nor is
it a sign of laziness. Most artists who appropriate (also known as "sample" or "remix")
do so since they are curious about how existing images that can be used to produce
new creations that reference the original work when creating a new artwork.
Basically, artists strive to make and develop artworks that are stunningly beautiful
and suitable for everyone, not only for the artists to express themselves, but also for
audiences to comprehend and share a common reaction to the piece of art.
4. What are the two forms of forgery? Explain each.
Answer:
A simple forgery is one that makes no attempt to mimic a legitimate signature. A
simulated signature is one in which the forger tries to imitate a real signature.

Let’s Make This Happen

that artwork, answer this essay question: To what extent is art appropriation a form of
forgery?
Artist: Marcel Duchamp

Subject: The Mona Lisa, painted in the 16th century by Leonardo da Vinci
(1452-1519), and the most celebrated portrait in the world.
Art appropriation is not a form of forgery it is because forgery is about simply
copying and deceiving while appropriation is about copying but transforming the original
art, along the line of pre-existing objects or images are used by artists in their work with
