RD98X Can't Realize IP Multi-Site Connection Repair Case

1. Fault phenomenon description

RD98X IP multi-site connection can’t realize communication, there isn’t any response when we
use RDAC software to test and it can’t connect with each other.
2. Fault phenomenon reason analysis
1) We judge the radio has a fault of not realizing IP multi-site connection according to the fault
phenomenon as above.
2) The main reasons for software fault are as followed: wrong Ethernet IP address and
authentication code , IP internet UDP port, IP internet service, remote repeater diagnosis and
control doesn’t open.
3) The main circuit causing hardware fault is Ethernet chip circuit.
3. Specific maintenance case
Case 1
Radio Type Frequency Band Firmware Version
RD98X 400-470MHZ R4.01.02.000
 Fault Phenomenon
RD98X IP multi-site connection can’t realize communication; there is no response when we use
RDAC software to do the test.
 Fault Analysis
It is belonged to the fault of not able to realize the IP-multi site connection according to fault
description.
 Test Step
1) Firstly, we need to exclude the software fault, the CPS setting of RD98X is as figure 1;
2) Use RDAC software to do the diagnostic analysis.
3) It will appear figure 3 if the 2 point setting as above. If the CPS setting and RDAC software are
normal, but it doesn’t show the figure 3 which means radio is not normal, it may have fault.
4) We can exclude the software fault according to the fault description as above, then we focus
our attention to check Ethernet chip circuit.
5) Use multimeter to check and test resistance value of TX and RX circuit as figure 4 shows, it is
0 ohm, then we need to replace Ethernet chip. It returns to normal condition after we use
RDAC software to test, the fault is eliminated.

12
Figure 2

13
 Summarization
This fault is because that TX and RX circuit is short circuit and then burn the ethernet chip.

TM800 No Voice Output Detection

1. Fault phenomenon
1) Turn on the radio, no power on voice output, screen display normal, press PF1 monitor key, no
voice output from speaker.
2) Turn on the radio, there is power on voice output, press monitor key, speaker makes out
“zhizhi” sound, no voice output when talk.
3) Turn on the radio, no power on voice output, the voice output is normal when talk.
2. Cause Analyze
1)Cause 1:
a. According to phenomenon 1, the cause is no output from audio amplifier. This could be
caused by audio amplifier problem.
b. In receiving status, audio amplifier has output with slight heat. It could be the malfunction of
speaker.
2)Cause 2:
According to phenomenon 2, we can judge that the audio amplifier and speaker are normal. The
malfunction may happen in receiving IF and modulating.
4) Cause 3
According to phenomenon 3, the voice output is normal when talk, but no power on voice.
Because the power on voice is sent out by CPU, and then pass to speaker by amplifier, the
malfunction should happen in the circuit which is between CPU output and audio amplifier.
3. Typical Maintenance Case
Case 1.
Model Frequency Range Firmware Version
TM-800U 400-470MHz z V2.4.04
● Fault phenomenon
Turn on the radio, no power on voice, screen display normal, press PF1 monitor key, no voice
output from speaker.
● Cause analyze
Pilot analyze by fault phenomenon, the reason of no voice output from audio amplifier could be
the audio amplifier is malfunction. In receiving status, the audio amplifier has output but with
slight heat means the audio amplifier works normally. The problem could be in the circuit which is
between audio amplifier and speaker.
● Detection steps(Fig 1., Fig 2.)
1) Step 1: Exclude the malfunction of speaker, at first, check whether the cable which connects
host J504 to PCB J502 is normal or not; Second, check whether the current limit R518, R519 are
normal; Continue to Step 2 if the mentioned parts are normal.

15
2) Step2: Check whether audio amplifier TDA1554/TDA8561 is in receiving status or not,
maximize the volume, amplifier is working, if the amplifier is totally without heat, meaning the
amplifier is not working. Check the amplifier power supply voltage is 13.8V. If the amplifier is with
slight heat, the malfunction should be in the circuit between amplifier output and speaker. If the
amplifier is with serious heat, it means short circuit happens in the circuit of amplifier output.
Then we should only exclude short circuit problem.
3) Step 3: In receiving status, the amplifier front audio signal is about 80MV, output is normal,
change audio amplifier IC.

Fig 1

Fig 2

16
● Conclusion
According to above analysis, there are three causes that will cause radio power on without voice:
Audio power amplifier TDA1554/TDA8561 malfunction, current limit resistor puncture, speaker
malfunction.

Case 2
Model Frequency Range Firmware Version
TM-800 400-470M V2.4.04

● Fault phenomenon
Turn on the radio, there is power on voice output, press monitor key, speaker makes out “zhizhi”
sound, no voice output when talk.
● Cause Analyze
According to fault phenomenon, we can judge that the audio amplifier and speaker are normal. The
malfunction may happen in receiving IF and modulating.
● Detection Steps (Fig. 3)
1) Step 1: check audio signal output of IFO test point, the output range is normal, between
50MV-70MV, we suspect it is IF TDA31136 broken.
2) Step 2: Adjust L135, the voice is merely changed, voice is small and can’t be adjusted. Then change
L135.
3) Step 3: Check filter L104, use tweezers to touch it, the voice is changed and the voice is seriously
distorted. Also “shasha” sound comes out. We suspect the filter is broken. Then change the filter.
4) Step 4: Under the condition that all the above circuits are normal, but with small voice and no
receiving sound, it should be electronic volume control problem. Check the pin of the audio signal of
IC125 M62364, at the 4th pin, 300VM is normal; at the 14 th pin, 300VM is normal, if there is no
output, then change IC125, the problem is solved.
● Conclusion
The above fault is mainly cause by malfunction of ceramic filter L104. Receiving no voice output is
mainly caused by malfunction of L135.

17
TC610 RX No Voice Output Detection

1. Fault phenomenon
Power on the radio, there is power on voice, LED indicator turns green when receiving, no
receiving voice.

2. Cause Analyze
The radio has power on voice, means the audio amplifier circuit and speaker work normally; the
indicator turns green when receiving means the radio can receive matched carrier, we can judge
the fault is RX no voice output. Besides the fault of software configuration such as signal not
matched, the problem should mainly be in the baseband processing circuit. The components are
involved in: Modem 50C24, baseband processing IC AN29160.

3. Typical Maintenance Case

Case 1.
Model Frequency Range Firmware Version
TC-610 400-420MHz V1.03.11
● Fault phenomenon
Turn on the radio, there is power on voice; the indicator turns green when receiving, but no
receiving voice output.
● Cause analyze
There is power on voice meaning the audio amplifier circuit and speaker is normal. At first we can
check RX no voice whether is caused by software configuration fault. Then we can check IF
receiving modulation circuit and audio processing circuit. Read the frequency for the radio, the
current signal channel information is as follows: RX and TX frequency are both 403.625MHz;
channel spacing is 25KHz, no CTCSS/CDCSS. Now we can exclude the cause as of soft
configuration fault that conducts RX no voice. We need to dissemble the radio.
● Detection steps(Fig 1., Fig 2.)
1) Dissemble the PCB from the radio, connect speaker to it. Use Comprehensive test instrument
to output receiving signal, output frequency as of 403.625Mhz, -80dBm, audio modulating
frequency 1KHz, frequency deviation 3KHz. Have the antenna port to receive the signal. Now we
see the indicator turns green, but the speaker no receiving voice output.
2) Use a multimeter to test the voltage of modulator; it is 2.8V (Normally it is 2.8-3V).
3) Use a multimeter to test the baseband ICU200 Pin 1, voltage is 5V, normal.
4) Test baseband IC U200 Pin#29 no signal output, abnormal. Pin 29 is the audio frequency
output of IF modulation IC U200. Normally there must be 250mv audio frequency signal output.
We suspect U200 is bad.
5) Change the baseband ICU200 (AN29160), test baseband IC29160 Pin#29 has 250mv signal
output. Maximize the volume, the speaker output normal receiving voice. Problem solved.

18
● Conclusion
The fault as of no receiving voice output is caused by damage of baseband IC U200 (AN29160).

TM610 Cannot Power On Repair Case

1. Fault Phenomenon
Symptom: After connecting the power supply, turn on the radio, no voice, no display.
2. Cause Analyze
From the phenomenon, we could judge that the radio can’t power on. There are two circuits will
cause the power on failure: power supply circuit, OMAP circuit. The main components are power
on key, 19.2Mhz crystal oscillation, reset IC, voltage regulation IC.
3. Typical Maintenance Case
Model Frequency Host Version
MD780 400-470MHz R3.05.10.001
▪ Fault Phenomenon
After supply the radio with DC, no power on voice, no response when press PTT and no current.
▪ Fault Analysis
From the fault phenomenon, there is no current indication after power on radio with DC, we can
judge it is power supply circuit problem fail to power on radio.
▪ Detection procedure (Fig 1, Fig 2
1) Power on the radio after add power, test U902 output voltage is 5V, normal;
2) Test U900 3V3D voltage output, is 3.3V, normal;
3) Test U901 3V3DP voltage output, is 3.3V, normal;
4) Test U903 1V8D voltage output, is 1.8V, normal;
5) Test U919 1V6D voltage output, is 0V, abnormal; The output voltage should be 1.6v under
normal circumstance. We suspect U919 is damaged.
6) Replace U919, 1V6D voltage output is 1.6V, normal, the radio can be powered on normally.
▪ Conclusion
The failure of power on is due to OMAP power supply abnormal caused by U919(1V6D) damage.
