Ductile Reinforcement Guide

This document provides guidelines for calculating the area of cross-section (Ash) of confining reinforcement bars used in submerged columns according to IS 13920:2016. It gives three formulas for calculating Ash based on factors like compressive concrete strength (fck), yield strength of steel (fy), column dimensions, and bar spacing. It then works through an example calculation for a specific column, determining the required diameter and spacing of confining reinforcement bars.

DUCTILE REINFORCEMENT-SUBMERGED COLUMNS

As per IS 13920:2016 clase: 8.1 the area of cross section, Ash, of the bar forming
rectangular links, to be used as special confining reinforcement shall be maximum of
fck Ag
-
Ash = 0.18 Sv h 1
fy Ak

fck
Ash = 0.05 Sv h
fy
Ash = area of the bar cross section.
S = Spacing of links
fck = characteristic compressive strength of concrete.
fy = yield stress of steel.
h = Longer dimension of rectangular link measured to to its outer surface
Ag = gross area of column.
Ak = area of concrete core

Size of Column 300 x 300

fck = M 30
fy = Fe 500

Clear Cover to
logitudinal reinforcement 40 mm

Dia of links 10 mm

-
h = 300 2 x 40 + 2 x 10
= 240 mm

Sv = smaller of (i) 300 4 75 mm

Min.of Sub. (ii) 6 x 12 72 mm

(iii) 100 mm
.
. . Sv = 70 mm
2
Ag = 90000 mm

2
Ak = 57600 mm

2
Ash = 102.06 mm
2
Ash = 50.40 mm
2
Max Ash = 102.06 mm

Dia of link 8.060609 mm

So provide 10 mm dia rect. link @ 70 mm c/c

lo = Maximum of (i) 300 mm

(ii) 1/6 x 4350 725 mm

(iii) 450 mm
.
. . Lo = 750 mm

Provide 10 mm dia links @ 70 mm c/c near the joints for a distance of 750mm
