Bio Lab 2 Food Chain

The document discusses a lab experiment on constructing food chains and food webs to model how energy and matter move through ecosystems. It lists various organisms found in nature and gardens and their roles as producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers or decomposers. The discussion explains what food chains and food webs show and how energy decreases at each trophic level. The conclusion emphasizes that food webs demonstrate the interconnected relationships between organisms and how they rely on each other for food.

Lab: #2

Date: May 20, 2021

Tittle: Food web and Food chain

Aim: Observe and construct food chains and food webs of the feeding relationships among
the organisms within and ecosystem. Essentially, they show who eats whom. In this way,
they model how energy and matter move through ecosystems.

Discussion:
A food chain is a flow of energy from one organism to another. A food web is a
detailed diagram that shows many different food chains and how they are linked together.
The arrows in a food chain/web show the direction in which energy and matter moves
through the food chain. Energy decreases as it moves up trophic levels because energy is lost
as metabolic heat when the organisms from one trophic level are consumed by organisms
from the next level. Producers get their energy by making their own food for e.g: green
plants, small shrubs, fruit, algae, and phytoplankton. Consumers get their food by eating other
living things for e.g.: butterfly, rabbit, pandas, and zooplankton. Animals that eat plants
exclusively are herbivores while animals that eat only meat are carnivores.

Conclusion
A food web is used to show the relationships between organisms in an ecosystem,
overlapping food chains demonstrate how these organisms are all connected and rely on each
other for food.
A food web separates the levels of producers and consumers by explaining relationships and
food sources. A food chain balances the eco system and shows that plants are the foundation
and explains the movement of energy and nutrients. Important to mention is plant is one of
the most self- sufficient as it creates its own food, while organisms further up the food web
relies on other organisms for food.
