Directions: You are inside the cell, specifically the skin cell. You are given the task to monitor its life cycle. Below are the
different checkpoints in cell’s cycle. What will you ask to the cell for each checkpoint to ensure that it proceeds to the
next phase normally? Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper with a short explanation for each checkpoint.

What Can I Do

My Cell Cycle
Directions: Illustrate the cell during the two major phases of its life cycle by drawing a symbol or something
creatively that may represent its activity on that phase. Write a short explanation below of what you have
drawn for each phase.

It is significant that cells divide by mitosis only when they are required to do so. You have learned
cancer is a disease that result when genes that normally control cell division mutate. The cell may
divide over and over again, creating an irregular mass of cells. It is known that several different
control genes must mutate before a cell becomes cancerous and this can happen just by chance.
The risk is higher by any factor that can cause mutation, such as: ultraviolet radiation (sunlight),
ionizing radiation (from x-rays), various chemicals, including several contained in tar from tobacco
smoke, and some viruses such as human papilloma virus (HPV).

Directions: Now that you know the importance of ‘your cell cycle’ and the consequences once it is not regulated
properly, what can you do to maintain a healthy and normal cells? What actions will you take to prevent from having
cancer or formation of unwanted cell division? List 5 “TO DO” to maintain health and 5 things “TO AVOID” to prevent
illness on a separate sheet of paper.
