Introduction
A Permit to Work (PTW) system provides a formal documented system
to control potentially hazardous activities, and is an integral part of a
safe system of work.
Historically, PTW systems have been paperbased. However, new
technologies, such as e-Permits or Integrated Safe Systems of Work, are
playing an ever increasing role in assisting organisations to achieve
effective management of hazards, and delivering a step change in
safety performance.
Why use an electronic Permit to Work system?
The traditional, current Permits to Work are a paper-based system, which offers plenty of
scope for improvement. Permit To Work (PTW) refers to management systems used to
ensure that work is done safely and efficiently. These are used in hazardous industries and
involve procedures to request, review, authorise, document and most importantly, de-
conflict tasks to be carried out by front line workers.PTW has been paper-based in the past,
