ENHANCING AND DECORATING BAMBOO,
WOOD, AND METAL PRODUCTS
Written by Adelina T. Cabatic

Industrial Arts is an educational program that provides learners the opportunity to work
independently and cooperatively as they apply decision –making and problem-solving skills in
undertaking challenging, stimulating, and enjoyable activities.

These are the types of activities that require creativity, resourcefulness, patience, and an
inclination towards working with the hands. If you enjoy creating crafts and artful objects one
can use at home, school, or in the office, you can easily learn activities related to Industrial Arts.

After the lesson, you will learn the Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) such
as:

 Discuss the importance and methods of enhancing/decorating bamboo, wood, and metal
products. (TLE6IA-0a-1)

How to Use this Module

Before starting this module, I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you
while enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully enjoy the
objective of this module.

Many Philippine products are in demand both in the local and international market like
furniture, home decors, and accessories. These products are mostly made of bamboo, wood,
and metal. Many entrepreneurs create and innovate products to meet the demands of the
market. These are done by using different methods or techniques in designing the products.

Importance of Enhancing/Decorating Finished Products

► Increase the overall appearance of the product.

► Increase marketability and saleability.

► Maintain the durability of the product.

Methods/Techniques in Enhancing/Decorating Bamboo, Woodcrafts, and Metal

Crafts

Products made of bamboo, wood, and metal can be enhanced through different
techniques to increase the products' face value and to make them more durable.

♦ Woodcraft and Bamboo Enhancing Techniques

1. Woodturning – is a process of using a lathe machine to make various forms and shapes of
wood.

2. Hand carving – is a method in wood crafting using a sharp object to create designs on the
wood. Tools such as chip carving knife, gouges, and chisels are used.

3. Pyrography – is considered an art using fire or heat to decorate wood.

Pyrography pen is used to

draw a design on the wood.

4. Flocking – technique lines the interior of the drawers and boxes with a velvety finish.

5. Inlaying – combines several techniques that involve inserting pieces into a base object to
incorporate new designs on the original product.

Precious stones are incorporated. Pieces of wood are

6. Gilding – is considered a decorative technique in which powder or thin film is applied on

wood or other materials to give a thin coating of gold.

A thin gold film is applied on the surface of the wood

7. Staining – The wood stain is a type of paint used to color wood and give it the illusion of
texture.
Stains penetrate deep into the woods. The initial application of any paint or varnish is
similarly absorbed into the substrate, but because stains contain lower amounts of binder, the
binder from a stain resides mainly below the surface while the pigment remains near the top or
at the surface making the larger pores to appear darker.

8. Painting – is considered the simplest way of decorating wood since there is a variety of
colors that you can choose from.

Know More About Paint

Paints are liquid coatings that form a decorative, durable, and solid film when dried up.
Paints come in different colors and textures (non-gloss, semi-gloss, gloss). Aside from different
colored paints, you can also use varnish to enhance your finished products.
The varnish is an example of paint without pigment.

1. Components of Paint
1. The pigment is a powder substance that gives color to the paint.
2. Binder holds the pigment together and sticks them to the surface.
3. The liquid vehicle is an additional component of paint. This could be water, thinner,
or oil.
