Michigan State is in the Midwestern region of the USA with an absolute location at the coordinates 44.3148 latitude and 85.6024
longitudes. On the relative location of Michigan State, it borders the State of Wisconsin and Lake Michigan on the west side, part of
Canada, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron on the East side, state of Indiana, and State of Ohio on the South side, and part of Canada, Lake
Superior, and upper Peninsula of Michigan on the west side.

4. Characteristics of Current Global Region: Explain what key sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics define this

Currently, State of Michigan has a population of 9.88 million people with a majority of the population, (90%) being comprised of
Whites and the rest of the population comprised of other races including Asian, African Americans, and Latino. The most common
language spoken by the people of Michigan is English and Spanish. The state is characterized by a multicultural population.
The physical features that characterize the State of Michigan are the five Great lakes, hilly and rugged on the west side, and heavily
forested Porcupine mountains. The eastern side of the region is characterized by low lying plains and inland swamps. The highest
Mountain in Michigan is Mt. Arvon which has a height of 1979 feet above the sea level. The region is also characterized by a high
number of islands that make the shoreline of Michigan one of the longest in the United States.

5. Interactions of Current Global Region: How have humans and the environment interacted to produce observable
landscapes in your current region? Include citations for your resources using APA style guidelines as needed.

Human and environment interactions in Michigan are observed in the creation of significant commercial waterways such as the
Lake St. Clair which connects the rivers and lakes across the state including Lake Huron, Detroit River, and Lake Erie. Human
interactions with the environment in Michigan have resulted to the creation of Isle Royale, an Island National park.

South Sudan is located in the central region of Africa lying between the eastern and the northern hemisphere. The region is bordered
by six countries including Uganda, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African
Republic. I will be moving to the South Sudan which lies at the absolute location of 8.00 Latitude and 30.00 Longitude.

4. Characteristics of New Global Region: Explain what key sociocultural (human) and physical characteristics define this as

According to the World Bank data, by 2017, South Sudan had a population of 13.02 million people who are grouped into five major
ethnic groups including The Dinka, Nuer, Shilluk, Toposa, and Otuho. English is the official language in South Sudan and Arabic
the second most popular language. The country has low literacy levels with only 27% of the population being able to read and write.
Christianity and Animist are the two major religions in South Sudan.
The country is landlocked with plains on the northern side of the country, and highlands on the southern side. The major physical
features in South Sudan are the White Nile River and the Sudd Swamp.

Part III: Comparison of Similarities and Differences
1. Similarities: Based on the physical and sociocultural (human) characteristics you have described, what are the major
similarities between your current and new region?

One of the main similarities between the Michigan and South Sudan is that English is the official language in both regions.
Christianity is also the major religion in both regions.

2. Differences: Based on the physical and sociocultural (human) characteristics you have described, what are the major
differences between your current and new region?

Some of the major differences between the two regions are that while Michigan is characterized by forested highlands, great lakes,
and large rivers, South Sudan is characterized by vast lowlands and very few rivers. The racial compositions in the two regions are
also different from the population of South Sudan is majorly comprised of Sudan Africans while the population of Michigan is
majorly comprised of Whites.
