Do you think the five principles of effective oral communication were followed? Which
ones were followed? Which ones were not?
What advice would you give to make the speaker more effective?
Effective oral communication should always be practiced when addressing speeches so that the
audience will have the willingness to listen without getting easily bored and the audience
participation through listening a speech also depends on how the speaker delivers that speech.
Watching the speech of President Duterte at Philippine China Trade and Investment Forum in
2016 seems to be over whelming as he stands for the betterment of our country Philippines. It
can be clearly emphasize that President Duterte affirms partnership with China as the Asian
superpower, in my own understanding China and Philippines have commonalities like for
example both countries are willing to cooperate in building infrastructures and combating crime
and illicit drugs trade. That only implies that Philippines is showing how complex relations are
not a hindrance to a positive and mutually beneficial engagement. But aside from the China and
Philippines partnership President Duterte stressed that “The Philippines destiny is at Asia” means
that United States and Philippines might not pursue its Partnerships. And it seems like the
President is implying that Philippines can stand on its own even without the help of one of the
most powerful country United States Those statements are what clearly I understand throughout
the speech.
The speech structure is complete and made it more interesting and easy to understand. The
President’s complete speech has a positive impact in individuals perspective to the Duterte
Administration and upon hearing that it is also beneficial to everyone to be informed and to
expand every ones thought and perspective in allying at different countries. The speech states
that affiliating at different countries has a positive outcome for the betterment of our country and
that is what the speech wants to imply. In every statement that the President addresses he does it
with hand gestures which is a great factor to persuade or make the speech more convincing.
I found that the speakers way in addressing the speech is over- natural to the point that the
speaker is not considering the context; on where he is (which is at Philippine China Trade and
Investment Forum that is nationally acclaimed setting), on who are the people hearing that
speech which is most of them are government officials. Before starting the Speech the speaker
did not even do some greetings which became requisite every time delivering speeches most of
us are used to speeches with greetings before going on to the speech.
Every Filipino citizen like me is already used in the way President Rodrigo Duterte addresses his
speeches. Every time he delivers his speech having his on point opinions, unbiased beliefs and
even incorporating tough or harsh words in most of his speeches became his trademarks every
time he delivers speeches. But I always ask my self is there any possibilities that one day the

president’s way of talking will replicate in his position or title as the President of the Republic of
the Philippines. Because in these past five years of his administration there are numerous
speeches that he already addressed with his trademarks upon doing speeches and many
concludes, including me that the President should do his speeches in an appropriate manner in a
more formal or descent way like what should a president of the country do. The sincerity is there
but mixing with the hard hitting yet rough words which is for the President is just typical words.
The point is the speaker should be aware and be sensitive that many found those trademarks of
him rude.

Do you think the speech followed the principles of effective written communication? Why
or why not? What advice can you suggest?
2015 Mamasapano Clash was one of the most tragic incidents that shocked the whole
Philippines. After knowing that said clash, Filipinos look forward what will be the President’s
(Benigno Aquino III) response.
Upon reading the translated English response of the former president regarding the 2015
Mamasapano Clash. At first impression, anyone would get tired by just looking on it but upon
reading it, that speech will going to test your skill at understanding certain grammars and even
questioning what you know about what really a good speech is especially when you are that type
of person who is conscious when it comes to speeches.
The intention of the speaker is clearly recognized, what the speaker wants to address is attained
through delivering the speech. It can already be conclude that the speech wants to address what
happened at the Mamasapano encounter to every individual; the speech simply implies that the
president is explaining what it is all about and how the Mamasapano Clash started.
What I admired in this speech is that, every statement is supported with certain facts and claims
that makes it more convincing. Each statement is very well-supported by such evidences or
reports by AFP ( Armed Forces of the Philippines) MILF and SAF. The other factor that makes
every statement of the speech more convincing is that, the one who is addressing the speech, and
that is the president. Everyone knows and respect him because of his title or position as the
highest governing position or as the president. It is widely accepted that every individual
believes in him as he is the president of the country.
Grammatical correctness is one of the principles of effective written communication which is
very well practiced in the speech. The speech is for the whole citizens of the country and because
of that it is already expected that the grammars are very well organized and correct. As I involve
myself in every issue that our country faces and by reading certain articles I realize that when the
speech or text is for everyone it is predictable that every grammar is certainly correct.
Reading the translated speech can convey certain statements regarding that issue, every
statement has something to do with our own beliefs and perception our opinions will depend or
may depend in the president’s speech concerning to the Mamasapano Incident. The speech seems
to be a complete thought in that certain issue. Upon reading every statement you can come up
with an idea or you can question some statement but in continuous reading every questions will
be answered, you will be enlighten in every questions you have in your mind.
The tone of the writing seems to be serious as much as it can in terms of giving reports and
claims due to the incident and at the same time the speech last part is comforting as much as it

can when the speaker sent his condolences of the bereaved families of the Fallen 44 Special
Action Force members as the incident became a great loss in the country.
The advice I can suggest is that about the speech being concise and coherent. The speech needs
to address on the whole countrymen and we all know that more of the Filipinos are not much fan
of long speeches they get easily bored upon hearing some speeches what they seeks is that direct
to the point speeches without beating or running around. Concise speeches is another factor that
attracts individuals to hear or read speeches wherein they will be enlighten and every questions
they have will be answered after hearing or reading that speech. Another thing, not everyone
understands complex words; Complexity of the words used should always be observed since it is
for all Filipinos nationwide.
