_______4. It is used to describe the position of a point by its distance and angle from
the previous point.
_______5. It display instructions for the current step in the command and also

OBJECTIVES:
a. Identify the uses of command line and the command options;
b. Explain the difference between a Cartesian and a polar coordinate, and between an
absolute and a relative coordinate;
c. Create and edit geometry using the dynamic input interface: and
d. Use direct distance entry to enter distance values in creating geometry.
Lesson 3: INPUTTING DATA

KEY CONCEPTS
Every drawing action in auto cad requires some form of data input. Despite
of what types of geometry you will create, you are always inputting data in one
form or another.
In this lesson, you will learn to enter data using the command line, dynamic
input, direct distance entry, shortcut menus, and the Cartesian coordinate system.
You will use the ideas and knowledge and skills learned in this lesson in the given
exercises of this course.
After completing this lesson, you will be able to use the command line, explain
different types of coordinates, activate and use the Dynamic Input interface, use
direct distance

REVIEW

The most important settings that you should inculcate and adjust so that you can
illustrate object easily with the help of the drafting settings and options are OSNAP and
OPTION commands. You can also set the Polar tracking (F10), Object snap on(F3), Object
snap tracking(F11) and the Snap mode (F9) manually which can also be adjusted directly at
the lower right of the working interface or status bar and the dynamic input using the F12
to on or off.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW LESSON

INPUTTING DATA

A. THE COMMAND LINE

The command line is the primary place where A

you communicate with the software. Input
information data, or command on the
command line bar.

B. COMMAND LINE OPTIONS B

Command options appear on the command line. It always starts capital letter(s)
represents the letter(s) you enter to use that option. You are not required to input a capital
even small letter it will automatically follow.
The options for the command appear within [...] brackets when there is a current
command. If there is a default option for the command, it appears within<….>this symbol.
To use the default option, input the first letter of the command option then press ENTER.
C. ABOUT THE COORDINATE SYSTEM
Every object you’ve drawn is rested in any of the following, the world coordinate
system (WCS) or a user coordinate system (UCS). When you make a 2D object, the data you
input is ultimately processed by the software in the type of Cartesian (x, y) or polar
coordinates (distance, angle). You can either manually enter these coordinates or infer them
by picking a point in the drawing window. The Coordinates fall into two types, namely
Cartesian and Polar. They can be either Absolute or Relative Coordinate System.
This is a UCS
(User Coordinate
System)

The Cartesian coordinate is used to verify points on a plane that has a specified
distance from a horizontal line and vertical line axes that intersect at the origin of the system.
In the user coordinate system, the X axis represents the horizontal plane, the Y axis
represents the vertical plane and the origin 0,0 is located at the junction or intersection.
Positive X moves to the right from the origin and negative to the left, positive Y moves up and
negative down, and the Z axis moves in the positive direction directly towards you and
negative beyond 0,0 the viewer. Note that for this course we will only be concerned with the
X & Y coordinates since we are working in 2D. The Z coordinate will always be zero and need
not be specified.
The absolute cartesian coordinate are based from the intersection X, Y axes or
origin (0,0). It uses the precise value or location of point for X and Y. To specify the absolute

cartesian coordinates in the dynamic you should start with hashtag # prefix symbol. If you
entered absolute cartesian coordinates on the command line instead of in the tooltip, the
hashtag # prefix symbol should not be used
anymore. While the relative cartesian Based on this illustration, here’s how
coordinate is based on the previous point to identify the Cartesian coordinate of
entered as your “0” origin. The relative the following points.
cartesian coordinate is the spot of a point
relative to the last point. To specify the
relative cartesian coordinate, precede with @ symbol then the coordinates value. For example,
entering @ 2,3 specifies a point of 2 units from point A towards to your left as X axis and 3
units upward with the Y axis for point B or from the previous point A in the illustration below

Absolute and Relative Cartesian Coordinate Reading Example

Coordinate Absolute Relative
A. # 3, -3 #3, -3
B. # 5, 0 @ 2, 3
C. # 5, 5 @ 0, 5
Cartesian
D. # 0, 6 @ -5, 1
E. # -6,0 @ -6, -6
F. # -6, -2 @ 0, -2

The Polar Coordinate System on the other hand, uses one distance and angle to
describe the site of a point rather than the two distances. The absolute polar coordinate
start from the origin (0,0) and it’s specify the number of units from the origin as the distance
and the angle degrees of the line from the coordinates system. Specify absolute polar
coordinate precede with the hashtag # prefix symbol on the dynamic input. If you enter
coordinate on the command line instead of in the tooltip, the hashtag # should not be used
anymore. For example, entering # 3<45 specify point 3 units from the origin at an angle of
45 degree from the x axis. While the relative polar coordinate is based on the previous
point entered. To specify a polar relative coordinate, precede with a @ symbol then the
dimension or the number of and the angle. For example, entering @1<45 specifies a point at
distance of 1 unit from the last point specified at an angle of 45 degrees from Y axis. Take
note that before you start inputting the data in the tooltip there should have the command
line or polyline.

This Illustration shows an example

of how the Absolute Polar
Coordinate ca be determined in
Auto Cad.

Absolute and Relative Polar Coordinate Reading Example.

Coordinate Absolute Relative
A. #6<330˚ A. @6.2<68˚
B. #8<20˚ B. @6.8<135˚
Polar C. # 8<70˚ C. @3.0<70˚
D. # 9<170˚ D. @14.2<211˚
E. #10<210˚ E. @8.1<269˚

how the Relative Polar Coordinate can
be determined in Auto Cad.

D. About Dynamic Input

The Dynamic Input is a way of entering the data using the
key board dynamically beside the cursor rather in command
line bar. The dynamic input has the different parts such as;
the tooltip it provides alternative way to enter command, the
pointer input consist of dimensional input or angle input
fields shows boxes with measurements and angle of an object
created and the dynamic prompts with down arrow which
shows command option selection with the use of the down
arrow on the keyboard. The dynamic input can be controlled
using the key F12 to on or off.
E. Using Direct Distance Entry
Direct distance entry you have to turn off the dynamic input and turn on the Polar
tracking and replace the angle increment with 1. Start a command line then select
anywhere as your first point then drag the cursor toward the course of your desired
distance and angle. The software will prompt you to select a point or you can enter your
desired distance and angle. The point coordinates are computed based on the angle of the
cursor from the previous point selected and the distance you enter.

ACTIVITY 1

Task 1 and 2 Identifying the inputs in Cartesian Coordinates and Creating the
Object using the inputs data
Direction: Determine the absolute cartesian and the relative cartesian coordinates of each
point on the illustration below. Then after determine the inputs try to illustrate the object
using the inputs data to create the object. (The task two is optional it advisable only if you
have laptop with the APP of Auto Cad 2015.)

that makes the statement false and write the correct answer on the space provided.
________1. If you’re going to use the direct distance entry you need to set the polar tracking
on and the angle increment.
_________2. The relative coordinates can only be determined if there is a previous point.
_________3. In using the Direct distance entry, you need not to enter the symbol such as @
