Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions.

If
Noelle travels 5 mph faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles apart,
how fast in mile per hour is each traveling?

Solution:

Let’s consider, N and V be the mile per hour of Noelle and Vivian respectively. Then
according to question:

N = V+5

N–V=5 Eq. 1
Since, distance = velocity × time, the second condition can be written as,

8N + 8V = 136

N + V = 17 Eq. 2
Solving the simultaneous equations 1 and 2, we get,

N = 11 mph

V = 6 mph

Hence, the speed of Noelle is 11 mph and of Vivian is 6 mph.
