Globalization's Role in Sustainable Development

This document discusses how globalization and achieving the UN's Sustainable Development Goals are interconnected. It notes that while globalization has increased economic integration, it requires greater participation from developed countries. For the Philippines to achieve the SDGs, the government must work with private and civil groups to educate disadvantaged communities and protect migrant workers' rights. Pursuing the SDGs ambitiously and inclusively through sustained economic growth that creates jobs and improves living standards can help achieve the goals of leaving no one behind by 2030.

Globalization: Gearing towards a More Sustainable Future for All

In 2015, the leaders of the world made a big promise. A promise that in the next 15
years, the lives of billions of people are going to get better with no one being left behind. These
are called the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and we are now past one-third into
this journey. And, with less than a decade to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) and given that the world is still in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic, it is necessary to ask
if the Philippines is on the right path to a sustainable future.

Globalization posses a far-reaching roots and a force that influences the direction of a
nation. The aim of globalization is to obtain interconnectedness of people and businesses
across the world that eventually leads to global cultural, political, and economic integration. It
is the ability to move and communicate easily with others all over the world in order to conduct
business internationally. The current shape and pace of globalization is driven by several
factors. Broadly speaking, economic, financial, political, technological, and social factors have
paved the way to globalization. Through the process of globalization, the world economy has
integrated and increased. This integration helps in advancing the trading of goods and services,
the capital flow, and made it easy for the migration of people across the world thereby bringing
in a sustainable economic development. One of the main challenges faced by globalization is
that it requires greated participation efforts from the developed countries than the poorer
countries and developing nations. Joint efforts are required for creating new political structure
and restructuring existing structure in order to bring a sustainable economic globalization. This
is not an easy effort for the government as it require a better clarity and transparency in our
economic systems, accountabilty, and above all, a vast reserve of political will.

The 2020 UN report reveals that the world is not on track to achieve the

aforementioned SDGs. While pathways and performances ultimately vary among countries and
regions, several common trends emerge that point to critical issues that need to be addressed.
For the Philippines, the national government could work with the private sector and civil society
groups on local initiatives that provide technology and skills to disadvantaged groups such as in
barangays within and outside the cities in order to further educate them about SDGs and the
steps we should take to attain each of it. In the case of Filipino migrants, there is a need to
protect their rights and well-being as well as to facilitate their participation in the country’s
development. Also, measures such as improving the quality of education and health services,
creating more opportunities for employment, and enhancing social protection should be
ultimately aimed towards alleviating poverty and reducing inequalities.

The new era of globalization brings in new challenges and opportunities. I believe
sustainable economic development can be achieved only by more participation from all the
levels of the economy. It is advisable to consider all factors when taking decisions regarding
globalization in an economy. Despite the challenges and opportunities, we could say that
globalization has changed the world system and the trends which can also helps in achieving
the SDGs. This will result in higher flow of the goods, capital, culture, people, technology,
invention, and services. A world that is more closely connected can be helpful to achieve the
SDGs: it can lead to a deeper understanding of how our environment and our consumer goods
are globally connected. Pursuing the SDGs requires an ambitious approach that gets everyone
behind the goal of leaving no one behind. Sustained and inclusive economic growth can drive
progress, create decent jobs for all, improve living standards, and most importantly, achieve all
of the objectives of SDGs by 2030.
