EXERCISE 4
On a separate paper, write a paragraph which begins with one of the
sentences below. Make the first sentence your maln Idea. Use slgnal
words for the listing pattem to complete the paragraph.
After you have written the paragraph, read It aloud to another
student. Find out if your ideas are clear and Interesting. Then rewrite
the paragraph.
a. I would like to have a job as student because very important for the
future.
b. Grandmothers are important for several reasons as Grandmothers are
the ultimate "fixers”.
c. The most important invention was telephone because spread
communication over a wide area.

Sequences
The pattern is used for the organization of two kinds of
material:
a. Event ordered by time,
Examples: History and Biography
b. Steps in process
Examples: the sptes in an experiment and direction for
building something.
The important ideas is that things happen in a certain order. Some
signal words for the sequence pattern:
first next last after at last
finally later beforer while at the same time
Other signal words for this pattern are dates, years, times of the
day, seasons and plain numbers.
a. Example: Chronological order (time)
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the thirty-second president of the United
States, served his country for most of his life. He was the only
president to be elected four times. He was born in Hyde Park, New
York, on January 30, 1882, and he began his studies at Harvard in
1903. In 1905, he married Eleanor Roosevelt, a distant cousin, and
they had six children. After serving in the New York State Senate,
Roosevelt worked in Washington as Secretary of the Navy until 1921.
At that time, he became very ill with polio and lost the use of his legs.
In 1928, Roosevelt ran for govenor of New York. After serving two
terms as governor, he was elected to the presidency in 1933.
Roosevelt died in office on April 12. 1945.
Main idea :
Franklin D. Roosevelt, the thirty-second president of the
United States, served his country for most of his life.
Note that each underlined word signals another period of time
in president Roosevelt’s live. Write the events that follow each
signal word:

b. Example : steps in process
Making orange juice concentrate from fresh oranges is done
entirely by machines. First, oranges are dumped onto a moving belt.
They travel into a machine which washes them with detergent. Next
they are rolled into juicing machines, where seven hundred oranges per
minute are split and squeezed. Then the rinds (the skin of the oranges)
are thrown out the end of a long tube. At the same time, the juice goes
through small holes in the bottom of the tube. Next, the juice goes into
another machine called the finisher. There, the seeds and other tiny
objects are removed. Last, the juice goes into large tanks, where most of
the water is removed.
Main idea :
Making orange juice concentrate from fresh oranges is done
entirely by machine.
Again, note the signal words. Each underlined signal word
points to a step in the process of making orange Juice
concentrate. Write the steps in the process that follow each
signal word.
a. First : oranges dumped on moving belt;
b. Next : oranges are rolled into juicing machine;
c. Then : rinds are thrown out;
d. At the same time : juice goes through small holes;
e. Next : finisher removes tiny seeds and objects;
f. Last : most of water is removed from juice.
