Teachers today must prepare students for an increasingly complex, interconnected, and
interdependent world. Being a globally competent teacher requires embracing a mindset that
translates personal global competence into professional classroom practice. It is a vision of
equitable teaching and learning that enables students to thrive in an ever-changing world. This
thought-provoking book introduces a proven self-reflection tool to help educators of all grade
levels and content areas develop 12 elements of such teaching. The book is divided into three
sections: dispositions, knowledge, and skills. Each chapter is devoted to an element of globally
competent teaching and includes a description of that element, tips for implementation
delineated by developmental levels, and links to additional resources for continuing the journey.
Examples of globally competent teaching practices include: (1) Empathy and valuing multiple
perspectives; (2) A commitment to promoting equity worldwide; (3) An understanding of global
conditions and current events; (4) The ability to engage in intercultural communication; and (5)
A classroom environment that values diversity and global engagement. Throughout, you'll also
find examples of these practices at work from real teachers in real schools. No matter what your
experience with global teaching, the information in this book will help you further develop your
practice as a global educator--a teacher who prepares students not only for academic success
but also for a life in which they are active participants in their own communities and the wider
world.
Global Education and Global Teachers
It is a way of approaching everything we teach and how we teach it. It broadens
horizon and encourages exploration of all subjects from a global perspective. It
contributes to the whole curriculum and enhances our understanding of whole
world. It studies different cultures and countries and issues that face them. In
order to become a global teacher we should be more equipped with knowledge
of various educational system outside the country. A global teacher is a
competent teacher who has enough skills, appropriate attitudes and universal
values to teach students with time tested. A global teacher must understand that
our world is interconnected, that they should also recognize that the world has a
variety rich of life, that he/she must understand and respect the diversity of
learners and he/she must be creative and innovative in teaching.
A Closer Look on the Education System of Selected Countries of the World
This lesson gave us information that the education is universal. From the
different educational system that are presented in those countries including
Philippine it says that basic education is compulsory. Those countries are all in
the K12 curriculum which is designed to provide a holistic education for all. It
will give students ample time to master basic academic skills as well as to
participate in co-curricular and community activities.
Multicultural Diversity: A Challenge to Global Teachers
In school we encountered different students coming from diverse cultural, social
class, racial and ethnic groups. Based on the multicultural education they
receive an equal opportunity to learn in school. Teachers and educators must
value the differences in prior knowledge and experiences of learners, we should
also need to be familiar to background, histories and culture of the learners in
order for us to have a better understanding about them. In able for us to achieve
the goals of multicultural education it is very important for teachers to be
knowledgeable about differences in cultures, religion, ethnicity and even the
language spoken by the students.
Broadening Teaching Perspective: Teacher Exchange Programs
Broadening your teaching perspective will help you to become a global teacher.
By expanding the experience of a teacher beyond the confines of their
classroom to the wider learning environment of the world will help a teacher to
achieve the level of global competitiveness. There some programs that will help
a teacher to broaden their teaching perspective. The teacher exchange program
offered educators to the opportunity to exchange teaching positions with a
teacher from another country. By this program teachers will improved their
understanding and appreciation of another culture and education system. With
this enhanced awareness, participants expanded the global perspective of
students and colleagues in their home and host communities and positively
impacted the quality of classroom instruction.
Bringing the World into the Classroom through Educational Technology
“Technology can bring the real world into the classroom, which means that as
teachers we can better prepare kids for exciting adventures that they face in
their future” – Dan Robert-Seychelles
Technology nowadays are most used tools of teachers in teaching and in
connecting to his\her students. Technology can provide support to teaching in
the resolutions of meaningful problems. Students will be interested in the
multimedia format in the form of sound and moving images. Through the use of
technology with just one click we can show to our student different places,
outside and inside the country, different images, sounds in relation to the lesson
they are discussing. Technology can help the learners visualize processes and
relationships that are invisible or difficult to understand. Technology provides
avenues for discussion and communication among learners. Just like in our
other subjects we used technology as a tool for communication. We created a
group where all my classmates and our professors are members of that group.
Our teachers posted all the necessary things that we need in that particular
subject, then our assignments, projects, and seat work will be posted or send in
that group. Yes it is an access for the student and teachers but not in all because
some cannot comply with this because they don’t have computers or internet at
home, some others are in the areas where it is hard for the students to access
technology. I hoped that they can also consider those instances.
As a future teacher this chapter broaden my knowledge and my perspective on
becoming a global teacher and how to address diversity it also addend my ideas
on how to be innovative in teaching. Diversity is of learners has now become a
local and global concern among teachers. In addressing the diversity of learners
I learned that I should need instructional modification, eliminating educational
those policies that can be discriminatory to them and applying different teaching
style that is appropriate with the learners. I must also avoid stereotyping and
learn as much about and become sensitive to and aware about their
backgrounds. As a future teacher I will improve my skills, knowledge and
values that a global teacher must have. If ever I will be given an opportunity in
the future to teach abroad this will become a system guide for me to apply all
the knowledge that I’ve learned from now and I will not limit myself to explore
to gain some more knowledge.
A global teacher is an educator that incorporates various global issues
into their curriculum including multiculturalism, economic,
environmental and social issues. The teacher expands the scope of their
viewpoint beyond the normal boundaries of the local classroom, as students
learn about diversity and how they fit into the global society.
According to The Guardian, global teaching is used to "give students a global
awareness and emphasize the fact that we work in a global market and if the
students can develop interpersonal relationships with a sense of global
citizenry, then they will be successful in all that they do".
As the world becomes more interconnected, teachers are diversifying their
approach to education. Today, global teaching is not only applied in the
classroom, but on social media platforms which expose students to a large
and diverse population of ideas and cultures.
Global teaching encompasses a range of interests that can cover anything
from how other students live in another culture to environmental issues.
Global teaching facilitates an open-minded approach; it implements lessons
that illustrate the perspective of other people in the world that may not have
the same cultural values and traditions as the students. It is important to learn
about other cultures to gain a deeper understanding of how to approach
global issues and communicate more effectively.
Characteristics of a Globally Competent Educator that a Future
Teacher Should Inculcate
In order to become a global educator, the learners of the online pre and primary teacher training
courses need to inculcate a number of characteristics and develop themselves into globally
competent educators. These characteristics cater to the enhancement of future educators, who are
currently pursuing a comprehensive course in the sphere of pre and primary teacher training. In the
following lines, we will have a look at these characteristics, whose inculcation can be helpful in the
development of future pre and primary educators.
Global competence for different educators is no longer utilized for just an elite few, rather is an
essential element of preparation for all pre and primary teachers of tomorrow. It helps if they are able
to inculcate the below-mentioned characteristics more deeply with colleges of education and
alternative training routes to emphasize this reality while preparing to be among tomorrow’s
educators.
1. Understanding the cultural identity
It is important for a future educator to understand how to deliver the course content to the students
and cater to their development. Understanding the cultural identity of the students can be helpful in
this respect and can be considered as an important form of global competence for the learners of the

2. Knowing and integrating global dimensions
There are a number of dimensions which an educator has to understand while trying to enhance
him/herself into a competent teacher in the future. Understanding and integrating these global
dimensions can be helpful for the development of future pre and primary educators.
3. Engaging students in learning
This is one of the prime jobs for any educator and a pre and primary educator is not an exception to
that. There are a number of ways to engage the students in learning and the inculcation of them
cater to the development of a future educator in a globally competent teacher.
4. Using real-life global examples
It can be helpful for an educator to utilize real life global examples in order to ensure the proper
delivery of the course content to future educators. The learners of online pre and primary teacher
training courses can avail a lot of such examples in order to make the delivery of the course content
to their students in the future, thus helping in the development of the students as well as themselves.
5. Valuing the input of cultural sensitivity
It is a common scenario for an educator to have students from various cultural backgrounds which
helps in the development of a unique cultural sensitivity. This is something which the learners of the
online pre and primary teacher training courses should inculcate in order to become a globally
competent teacher in the future.
6. Creating environments for positive cross-cultural interaction
In a classroom with a mixed culture, it is essential for a pre and primary teacher to create an
environment conducive for positive cross-cultural interaction. The future pre and primary educators

a pre and primary educator when they venture into the field of teaching.
8. Helping learners to find actions for improving local and global conditions
It is relevant for future educators, especially at the pre and primary level to help the students become
more and more concerned about the local and global conditions and teach them the ways to improve
these conditions while teaching. As the future pre and primary educators can develop students into
responsible citizens, they also help their own cause to become globally competent teachers and be
future-ready.
9. Assessing the students and providing growth opportunities based on their levels of
development
Assessment is one of the main cornerstones for the development of the students and a future
educator should be well aware of this fact. It not only helps in the improvement of the students but
also provides opportunities for their growth. Inculcating this particular characteristic helps in the
development of the teachers as well as complying to their aim of becoming globally competent
