VM-5N Differential Expansion Monitor

This document describes a differential expansion monitor that monitors the expansion of rotating machinery. It inputs signals from transducers, calculates the signals, displays them and can set alert and alarm levels. It has self-diagnostic functions and outputs the signal for recording purposes.

VM-5N Ramp Differential Expansion Monitor

This is a highly reliable ramp differential expansion monitor which monitors the
differential expansion caused by thermal expansion of the rotor and casing of rotating
machinery.
For large turbines, it is necessary to monitor differential expansion at machine start-up
and shutdown so that turbine rotating elements do not contact stationary elements.
The monitor inputs signals from the VK-P Series Differential Expansion Transducers
which indicate the ramp position of the rotor, calculates the two signals and displays
them on LCD.
It can also set alert and denger alarm levels in any high and low limit directions
independently to detect machine failures early on and inform the operator of these
failures, thereby preventing damage to the rotor in advance.
It has a built-in self-diagnostic function to inform the operator of input transducer
failures, thereby preventing rotating machinery from false shutdowns.

■ Main Functions 4. Self-diagnostic function

1. Display function Any failures in the input system, such as sensor break or imperfect
Differential expansion measured value, alarm level setting value, and connections are detected, then an input abnormal alarm is contact-output
sensor set gap voltage are normally displayed on LCD. and simultaneously, ALERT and DANGER alarm circuits are cut off.

2. Alarm function 5. Monitor output

ALERT alarm, DANGER alarm and input abnormal alarm are contact- Differential expansion signal is output from BNC connectors (on the front
output and displayed on LED. panel) and terminal board (on the rear panel) via a buffer amplifier.

3. Alarm delay time variable function 6. Recorder output

Alarm delay time can be adjusted from 0 to 6 sec. to prevent false alarm An analog signal proportional to the differential expansion is output from
9utput caused by noise, etc. the terminal block on the rear panel.

7. DANGER bypass function

When the alarm setpoint is changed during operation, alarm output is
disconnected so that no alarm is output by mistake.
