 Introduction
The original deck by Giovanni Vacchetta named “I Naibi di Giovanni
Vacchetta”, released in 1893, Turin- Italy, marks a fundamental
transition in the history of the Tarot in the West. The Tarot had
flourished in the Renaissance and has continued to grow unabated till
the modern day. What makes this particular deck so unique, not only
in a historical sense as a true scion of the Italian Renaissance tradition,
but also that sensual and somewhat whimsical esthetic that is so very
Italian (an artistic quality stemming as far back as their Roman
progenitors or even Etruscans}, are all thanks to the skill and sensitivity
of Vacchetta and his place in time.

Giovanni Vacchetta was born in Cuneo, 1863, and passed away in 1940
in Fossano, Italy. With the passion of the “Renaissance Man” still
persisting in his blood, he worked his way up to become “Master of
Design” at the Albertina Academy in Turin. Thereafter, he went on to
become Professor of Embellishment at the Industrial Museum in Turin.
He also became an esteemed lecturer of graphical and decorative design
at the Polytechnic School of Turin. It is no hyperbole to say that
Vacchetta was a genuine Master in his chosen field, dedicating his life
and soul to the arts and the tireless scholarship thereof. He also became
a patron of note, collecting local works of art, arranging many
exhibitions, and running museums.

And it was with this considerable expertise, passion and defining

sensitivity that Vacchetta was able to add so many evolutionary details
to the traditional Tarot of his day. Most invaluable of all, he contributed
a wealth of symbolic and allegorical features using everyday objects
people have an intimate association with. This made the deck far more
accessible, coming alive in a manner never known before, and for a
much larger portion of the populace. In this deck it is clearly
demonstrated that the necessity to fundamentally enrich the Minor
Arcana with said allegory and symbolism did not first occur circa 1910
with the presumed work of Pamela Cole Smith and Arthur Edward
Smith, but rather by pioneers such as Vachetta, whom literally had the
Tarot in his blood.

In this deck named “Neo-Vacchetta”, or “V” for simplicity, Cardcaptor

Calendula’s aim is to stay as true as possible to the original and
reproduce Vacchetta’s work in the bold flourish of colors one would
associate with the Renaissance and a palette we hope Vacchetta
himself would have approved of had the technological limitation of his
time not relegate him to the use of only black and white.
 The Fool

The cheetah is symbolic of the
dreamer: the animal’s speed,
carefree grace and survival
instincts reflect those of The
Fool; that dreamer which
pursues his/her dreams with
all speed and without
hesitation or consideration.
The inexperience and even
gullibility of The Fool means he
will march on towards his
dream, undaunted and
convinced of its attainment
no matter what. Hardly
anything would make him give
up. He lives in the moment, in
the “NOW”, and is unburdened
by the past or worries of the
future. “Stay in the NOW”.

 The Magician

Number ‘1’
To make your dreams come true
requires “real world” actions and
strategies. You are required to make
it happen. Though you can persuade
and deceive people with the “magic”
of your charade and intricate
trickery, this is not a viable long-
term strategy and the truth will
inevitably come to light. Here, The
Magician is holding a wand and
pointing or misdirecting our
attention in the direction he wants
(away from what he wishes to
conceal). He is a great persuader,
deceiving our perception of reality,
communicating precisely what he
wants us to believe. The key to your
success is not to rely solely on illusions, empty words, and crafted
perceptions. It must be constructed on a foundation of truth and
reality. In a practical sense, “you have to make it happen”.

This priestess is here holding a
Christian Bible as opposed to
some decks where she is
clutching a Torah. The bible
represents soul knowledge and
intuition. There are two
cherubs in the background with
twelve wings representing the
Twelve Disciples of the bible.
Another interpretation could
represent the twelve months of
the year. She is an enigmatic
figure. She is all mystery and
secrets and therefore not easily
understood. She however
knows what she wants. She is
an observer with a deep and
vast understanding. The most
compelling voice we cannot
ignore is “The Voice within
ourselves”.

with emphasis on beauty,
power, abundance and purity
(not her pregnancy). In the
Globus Cruciger (cross-bearing
orb) the cross represents
Christ's dominion over the orb
of the world which is here
literally held in the hand of this
earthly ruler. The Empress or
Queen owns and rules the
world. The head scarf indicates
that she is married. You can not
have beauty, power and
abundance without respecting
yourself and others. Indulge in
pure thoughts and stay pure in
mind and heart.

The orbed scepter in his
hand denotes his dominion
over the world of man as

This card represents belief and
faith. The duality and meeting
point between the spiritual and
material world. The keys held in
his hand represents the duality to
either “open or close”; to free or
imprison, of live or death. The
Hierophant is a religious leader
and teacher. Here, he is
represented as the Pope. He
represents the importance or even
sanctity of tradition, of cultural
convention and societal
structure. “The more secure the
Societal Structure, the more
civilized and developed the
individual would be”.

This Love card represents
Romantic Love. The two different-
colored tassels on either side of
the cherub symbolizes the choices
one needs to make regarding love
and that sometimes we do not
choose love, but love chooses us.
Also, it depicts the fact that
opposites attract, that your
differences can bring a certain
value to the relationship. The card
has a certain whimsical and
playful charm, depicting the
bitter-sweet nature of love.
Although we might get burned,
the pain or fear could never keep
us away from the joys of romantic
love. The eternal credo does go: “It
is better to have loved and lost,
than to never have loved at all”.

well executed. “I came, I saw,
I conquered”. No matter the
obstacles, they can be
overcome. The campaign,
however, might be a long
one, therefore, value the
journey. “Overcome yourself
first and then you overcome
the obstacle”.

French Revolution, representing
the individual’s inalienable rights
under a fair judicial system: Truth,
Accuracy, Exactitude,
Scientifically & Rationally Backed
investigation and Fairness. The
sword symbolizes decision
making. The scale means every
fact and detail must be carefully
and unbiasedly weighed and
considered before a decision can
be made. “Every decision has a
consequence that must be
considered before making your
choice”.

The eternally searching monk,
seeking tirelessly between the
outside and inner world. Wisdom
gained from life’s experiences and
a quiet, contemplative mind is
what this card represents. All
knowledge is ultimately self-
knowledge. This old man is sat at
night, quietly contemplating his
life’s experiences. The light cast
from the lantern is not so much
for reading the book in his hands,
but rather symbolizes the light of
his soul shining the way to his
goals and desires. “It is often in
the darkest of times that the soul
shines brightest and we best get
to know ourselves”.

Change is the only certainty. This
wheel represents the cyclical
nature of transformation and the
opportunities or luck this can
entail. We cannot escape change
and the quicker we accept it and
see that it provides us with
certain opportunities the
better―even if it only allows us a
chance to grow or get to know
ourselves better. Destiny is
unavoidable. The woman atop the
wheel is the same as the one
crushed beneath it, representing
the new and old, the young and
old, the fortunate and the ruined
etc. “Go with the flow, adjust
with the change if you not only
wish to survive but thrive”.

earthly strength and courage yet
is subdued and tamed by a woman
with superior moral strength and
justice, tethering the beast’s
brutality with the strength of her
will. The pillar by her side
represents a sturdy, steadfast
nature. “Adversity can be as a gift
when it amplifies our inner-
strength and allows for us to
grow spiritually”.

Much like the self-flagellation of
medieval Christianity, or even of
the heathen god Odin sacrificing
himself to himself, much soul
searching, self-knowledge and
spiritual wisdom can be attained
through suffering. Suffering here
represents a manner of cleansing
which could lead to an
experience of nirvana. This card
communicates that it is time for
some deep analyses of your life
path. Some deep meditation in
isolation. “Sometimes, in order
to progress, we need to stop and
re-evaluate our life’s path in
order to find our way and
progress even faster”.

Every beginning has an end. Everything
eventually dies, and yet is followed by
rebirth, and so on and so forth. On the
ground, like the remains of broken toys,
are strewn the symbols of power
representing king & emperors, nobility,
religious institutions and warlords, and
yet, they are raked into the same pile
with the lowly artists, laborers and
peasants. Death is the great equalizer.
The setting sun represents the old
passing into the new: a cyclical and
endless cycle. The ship represents the
hope that comes with new beginnings.

as long as we do not hold onto a past
that no longer exists. The present is
where hope lies”.

This card signifies moderation as an
element of balance. This girl is pouring
water from one jar to another jar.
These jars are different in color, as are
her dress colors. This means balancing
two things without emphasizing one
of the two, to be neutral. Mixing two
different two things seems impossible
but learn to accept the differences
between you and others and the
ability to stay together peacefully in
mind and environment. We can adjust
ourselves to be in harmony with other
people by just being ourselves with no
egos involved. “With patience comes

Negative thinking and pessimism are our
biggest threats. This picture present
Satan on his throne in the mouth of a
demon. Satan holding his snake tail is
symbolic of temptations or negative
experience that we need to overcome,
things like lust, addictions, toxic
relationship, drugs, and lack of self-
value. No matter how hard, what we
need to overcome are our negative
thoughts and habits. “It doesn’t matter
how bad any situation is, nothing is
scarier than our own minds, hearts and
souls.”
Overcoming negative thoughts and
habits starts with positive thoughts and
committing to avoiding bad habits.

This card is different from the Wheel of
Fortune card (#10) as this card represents
sudden and unexpected changes that
come like lightning striking the tower at
night when people least expect it. If the
tower had a strong structure from the
start, there is no way it can be destroyed.
Some situations make us realize that
something is off and that we are heading
in the wrong direction. Sometimes we
need to realize that we need to change
from current situations. “The Tower card
shows something abnormal is happening.
Something that was hidden became
apparent. This situation wants us to
realize that we need strong foundations
and need to make the required changes so
we will no longer waste our time.

darker the night. The naked lady means
purity. The water she pours into the
river represents feelings and intuition.
The two feet on the ground represents
logic capability. The two hands pouring
water represent awareness and
subconsciousness. There are 8 stars,
the biggest one is in the center. The
eight-pointed star is the Morning Star
or Venus, which is a brighter star than
the other stars. This is symbolic of the
five senses at the center. The rest of
the stars means the seven chakras.

This woman, named Diana in Greek-
Roman Mythology, is believed to be a
hunting goddess. In this picture Diana,
the hunting dog, waxing moon and
crab represent the Cancer zodiac
having the moon as ruler which means
heightened subconscious mind,
sensitivity, intuition and sixth sense.
The night having a crescent moon is a
symbol of uncertainty, secrecy, and
illusion. Dreams make us happy but if

and the sheep represents Saint Luke and
fall. This card shows perfection, peace,
forgiveness and unity. This cannot
happen if you do not overcome your life
lessons. It is a time for a new cycle and
new lessons are awaiting you. Mortal
enemies like a sheep and lion lie
together, represents peace and harmony.

Every loss, no matter how much sadness or pain we experience, will always bring a new
start. As in the picture, there is a ribbon tied very tight around the center sword and tied
loosely around the other two swords, meaning release, and not attached as the ribbon

Sadness and grief occur but life is still going on. Although we see it as a painful story, keep

Two silver cups, not bound with ribbons, are different from the other three hanging cups
similar in shape but with a different pattern. The words on the wall means “Glory to the
Lord”. We need to focus on these two cups and celebrate, instead of the three hanging cups
that means we cannot celebrate. It symbolizes a past that you cannot let go and certain
changes that you do not want. This card tells you to live in the present, not in the past.

vulnerable situation. It can cause you to feel depressed. This card is reminding you to stay
positive and to have a resilient attitude.

Like you are trusting that the organ will produce a sweet sound, “Dulce audition”, we need
to have faith. No matter how difficult the experience you have, if you drew this card, leave
