What is work ethic?

Work ethic is a combination of several moral principles based on the idea that hard work
is fundamentally valuable and worth pursuing. If you have a strong work ethic, you likely
possess other traits such as dependability, respectfulness, productivity and
collaboration, among others. For example, if you find work important and worthy of your
best efforts, you will do things like show up for work on time and complete tasks by their
due date. There are many ways you can demonstrate a strong work ethic, but mostly
this is done by paying attention to small things throughout the day like being punctual or
communicating well.

Why is work ethic important?

Having and demonstrating a strong work ethic is important because it can help you
quickly achieve career goals. When you possess these skills, you will likely perform
quality work, have strong relationships with colleagues and work towards achieving
important tasks that add value to your organization. These accomplishments will lead to
favorable reviews at work along with strong references and recommendations. Showing
that you are a reliable employee will also lead to more responsibilities and opportunities
—for example, work ethic is necessary for leadership roles.

All of these factors can lead to better chances at a raise or promotion and
accomplishing major long and short-term career goals. Displaying a strong work ethic
can result in you being seen as a highly valuable team member, which can lead to
beneficial advances in your career like a raise,
promotion or management position.

Work ethic skills

There are several qualities that contribute to having a strong work ethic. Here are just a
few key skills that can help you improve your work:

 Accountability: Having accountability means you are able to manage your own

work well without much oversight. If you are accountable, you will be seen as a
reliable team member who is responsible and contributes well to a task or project.

 Discipline: Having discipline means you are able to focus and complete tasks no
matter the circumstances. Managing your time well is a key component of
practicing discipline.

 Honesty: Being truthful at work is valuable because it can help tasks to be

completed more quickly and in a quality way. Practice honesty when giving
feedback, sharing project ideas and when you have made a mistake. Owning and
improving upon mistakes at work shows that you are willing to take risks and learn
from them.

 Humility: Being humble means having a healthy perspective of your own

importance in the workplace. This does not mean that you should have a negative
or low view of your work or skills. Instead, it means that you prioritize listening to
others, share your own ideas when it will be valuable and are honest about both
your wins and your areas of improvement.

 Integrity: Integrity is defined as always doing the right thing no matter who is

watching. Practicing integrity results in gaining the trust of those around you.
 Organization: Being well organized can help you get tasks done on time,
communicate clearly with others and set proper expectations about your work.
You might keep several workspaces organized such as your desk, computer,
calendar and notes.

 Quality work: While it is crucial to turn your work in on time, it is also important

that the work is done well and meets all requirements. If you consistently
complete work that needs revisions and leads to more time and effort, you may
not be considered as having a strong work ethic.

 Responsibility: Being responsible at work is a general quality that results in your

work being done well, on time and practicing good communication skills with
those around you. Responsible people know what is expected of them and deliver
on those expectations.

 Teamwork: Working well with others is a key component of work ethic. This

involves having respect for those around you, practicing proper communication
skills and having empathy so you understand how to interact best with each
individual you work with. This will allow you to easily work alongside a team
towards a common goal.

 Time management: Managing your time well can help you meet deadlines, set
appointments or meetings and communicate proper expectations about your
schedule. It is also important to be punctual at work both when you arrive and
when you have meetings.

How to demonstrate and improve your work ethic

Demonstrating your work ethic often simply means doing small things each day that
make you a better teammate to your colleagues, clients and managers. Here are
several tips you might consider when improving your work ethic:

 Minimize distractions. To demonstrate your discipline, it can be helpful to put

away things that might hinder or distract from your work. For example, if you find
yourself checking your cell phone regularly, you might put it away in your desk
drawer.
 Set goals. It can be helpful to focus on improving one or two work ethic qualities
at a time. To do so, ask trusted colleagues or mentors to help you identify some
areas for improvement. Start with these areas and try applying the SMART
goal framework for specific, measurable goals. You might also consider setting
OKRs with your team which can make your work more focused.

 Take notice of how you spend your time. During a workweek, pay close
attention to what takes up your time. You might notice that you tend to get on
social media sites in the afternoon, for example. While sometimes taking a short
break can be helpful and lead to more productivity, you should be mindful of being
distracted for long periods of time.

 Stay organized. Take some time to organize your notes, email inbox, desk and
any other workspaces. This can help keep you focus and create a simple, more
relaxing workday. It can also contribute to better time management skills.

 Practice balance. To have and maintain a strong work ethic, it is important that
you take breaks and have a healthy work/life balance. Working until you are
burned out can decrease productivity and effectively reduce your work ethic. Take
regular time off and schedule breaks throughout your workday.

 Believe in what you’re working on. Feeling excited about your company’s

mission, the work you are doing or some other aspect of your job can help
increase your work ethic. If you find that completing tasks in a certain way makes
it more exciting for you, like collaborating with teammates, try to incorporate more
of that into your workday. Look for aspects of your work that you are naturally
drawn to and focus on those.

 Manage your time wisely. Being on time and completing tasks by (or preferably
before) due dates is an easy and obvious way to show work ethic. It also sets you
up for success. You will be less likely to make mistakes due to rushing and you
can be more present and active during meetings when you do not feel
exasperated from hurrying.
Make it a point to be at work when it is expected of you. For example, if you are
expected to be at work from 9 am to 5 pm, you should be available during these times.
If you are not able to be working during this time, let your manager know as early as
possible with an acceptable excuse, such as a doctor’s appointment or a family
emergency.

Marginal Benefit: Definition and How It

Works
If you own a business, it's important to understand the relationship between the cost of
your products and the benefits you reap. Marginal benefit is a term in economics that
can be used to gauge this change in benefits as it relates to the quantity of a product.
Once you understand marginal benefit, the better you'll be able to set your business up
for financial success. In this article, we define marginal benefit, evaluate its importance
and explain how it works.

What is marginal benefit?

Marginal benefit refers to the maximum amount a consumer is willing to pay for an
additional product or service after the first unit has been purchased. In other words, it's
the change in benefit resulting from a change in the number of units a consumer already
has.
For example: Let's say a pair of shoes are being sold for $40. However, a consumer is
willing to pay $50 for the pair. The marginal benefit would then be $50. This means the
marginal benefit is higher than the actual price of the shoe by $10.

It's also worth noting that the marginal benefit tends to decrease as more goods or
services are consumed. This is because the want to purchase an additional unit
decreases the more a consumer already has of that product.

A marginal benefit can also be referred to as a marginal revenue. In business terms, the
more additional units a buyer sells of a good or service, the less revenue they're
bringing in. This is because they'll need to keep lowering the price of each good or
service to sell it as an extra unit.

How does marginal benefit work?

To understand marginal benefit, it's important to know how it works.

For example: Let's say a pair of pants is being sold for $50. However, you're willing to
pay $60 for the pair. The marginal benefit in this instance is $60 because that's the
most you're willing to pay for that pair of pants. This means the marginal benefit is $10
higher than the actual selling price.

It's also important to understand how a change in quantity affects the marginal benefit.
For the most part, marginal benefit decreases as additional products are consumed and
vice versa. This is because you become less interested in owning a product the more
you already have of it. In contrast, the less you have of a product, the more attracted
you are to purchasing it.

Using the example above, this means you, the consumer, might want to only pay $50
for the second pair of pants and $40 for the third pair of pants. Therefore, the marginal
benefit falls the more you purchase pants. The $50 for the second pair is the marginal
benefit whereas the $40 for the second pair is that instance's marginal benefit. This is
because that's the most you are willing to pay for additional pairs of pants. If the buyer
were to keep the price of the pants constant at $50, this means only two pairs of pants
would be sold to you because the marginal benefit of the third pair was less than the
asking price.

Why is marginal benefit important?

Marginal benefit is a great way to measure a change in benefits versus a change in
quantity. If you own a business, you're going to want the marginal benefit to consistently
outweigh the cost. This keeps customers interested in your product or service and
keeps you from having to lower the cost of the product too much. However, although it
can be assumed that the lower you make the cost of product or service, the less
revenue you'll bring in, that's not always the case.

If a business owner decides to lower the cost for the second or third pair of pants as
illustrated above, this could entice you to purchase more pairs of pants because they
are on sale. So long as the business owner's price reduction outweighs the marginal
cost of making more pants, the better off it'll be for their business. In addition, the pant's
price reduction is of benefit to you, as well, because this results in less that you'll have
to pay for an additional good or service. This scenario has the potential to be mutually
beneficial for both parties involved.

How does falling marginal benefit affect price?

To understand how a falling marginal benefit affects price, you'll need to understand
marginal utility. Marginal utility refers to the benefit gleaned from consuming an
additional product or service. According to the law of diminishing marginal utility, the
additional units of a product you purchase causes the marginal utility to decrease.

Similarly, if a business owner recognizes that you're becoming less interested in paying
the selling price for a product or service, they could decide to lower the price of said
product or service. In other words, the product or service would go on sale. This
happens to sell more products at the end of the day because a sale could entice you to
make an additional purchase. The price of any good or service has the potential to be
lowered the minute a business owner notices that consumers are willing to pay less for
more of that good or service.

How does availability affect marginal benefit?

The availability of a product or service also has the potential to affect marginal benefit.
This is because the less that something is available for purchase, the more the
consumer is inclined to want it.
For example: Let's say your company recently released a new, sleek laptop that's of
great interest to the public. Since it's a quality product and you know it'll be in high-
demand, you give it a high price tag and only sell a certain amount of them. Customers
know that there are only a certain amount of these laptops available, so they'll want to
get their hands on one no matter the cost. In many instances, they will likely want to pay
more for them than the selling price. Therefore, the marginal benefit would increase
despite a decrease in product availability.

On the contrary, if you were to release more laptops in the future, the value of the
product would diminish. This is because more laptops are readily available to the public.
Generally speaking, consumers like to know they have one of the select few products
available in the country rather than be part of a large majority.

Important skills to develop

If you want to advance your career, consider improving these skills:
 Adaptability: People who can work around sudden problems or changes tend to
get ahead in their careers. That's because being adaptable shows that you are
easy to work with and can handle anything. This admirable trait can help you
stand out to employers. In order to become more adaptable, you need to first
learn how to be an effective problem-solver while also managing your stress
levels. Being open to new challenges takes practice, but it is an excellent skill to
have.

 Analytical reasoning: If you want a job that involves data or decision-making,

then you need to improve your analytical reasoning skills. This means that you
can look at information to find patterns and draw conclusions. Be the person who
can make sense of data and decide what to do based on it.

 Creativity: Being a creative thinker is important for many careers. Along with

having soft creative skills, there are plenty of hard creative skills that are important
too. Depending on what job you want to pursue, you may want to consider
developing your graphic design, copywriting, copy editing, user-experience
design, photography, or video editing skills.

 Communication: Listening, writing and speaking are important communication

skills to have. When you learn how to connect with other people, you can open
yourself to all kinds of exciting career opportunities. Get comfortable writing
emails, talking on the phone, chatting over video calls and meeting in person.
When listening to others, make an effort to truly understand what they are saying,
and provide meaningful feedback.

 Emotional intelligence: This skill is the ability to understand the emotions of

yourself and others. Along with being empathetic, those with strong emotional
intelligence know how to respond appropriately in highly emotional situations.
They are good at detecting how people are feeling and finding solutions to their
problems. You can improve your emotional intelligence by asking people how
they are doing and making an effort to be more perceptive.

 Leadership: If you see yourself leading a team one day, then you need to learn
how to be an effective leader. Knowing how to manage a team,
delegate work, take on responsibilities, communicate to company leaders, make
good judgments and find unique solutions can help you prove that you are fit to lead your
team.

 Persuasion: Being a persuasive person can help you go far in your career. If you
are a salesperson, these skills can help you land a new client. If you are a
marketer, these skills can help you sell a concept. If you are interviewing for a job,
these skills can help you get a job offer. Being persuasive is all about learning to
build connections and provide value to others.

 Public speaking: Being able to speak confidently in front of a crowd is a very

marketable skill to have. This is especially true since many people are wary of
public speaking. If you could become someone who volunteers to lead the
company meeting or talk in front of clients, you would be likely to experience
many more opportunities. Being able to clearly express yourself and your ideas is
a major part of being an effective public speaker.

 Technology: As the workforce continues to use digital technologies, you need to

become well-versed in using these devices. Having solid computer skills is helpful
when applying to a variety of positions. While understanding the basics of a
computer system is important, you may also want to consider learning coding and
programming. Even learning some major software people in your field use can
make you a more hirable candidate.

How to improve your skills

Follow these tips to help improve your skills:

1. Define your goals

Understanding your short-term and long-term goals can help you figure out which goals
to focus on. Try to choose skills that can help you progress in your career. For instance,
if you want your employer to promote you to a management position,
you should work on improving your leadership skills. As you are setting goals, you can
research other people's journeys to master a certain skill. Consider breaking your
training up into sections, so your learning process is a bit more manageable. Once you
learn the basics of a skill, you can move onto more challenging goals.

2. Find a career coach or mentor

Finding someone who can support you while you work on your skills can be a great
idea. This individual can help you come up with a plan for reaching your goals. They
can also hold you accountable as you progress. Choose a career coach or mentor who
is both uplifting and determined to see you succeed. While you need encouragement,
you also want someone who is going to push you to do better.

3. Seek help from others

If you notice someone at work has a skill that you would like to work on, see if they
would be willing to meet with you. They can teach you the skill or help you find the
resources you need to get started. Even if they can't provide hands-on training, it's still
helpful to have someone you can go to for advice or answers to questions you might
have.

4. Find ways to motivate yourself

The key to reaching your goal is finding ways to stay motivated. Think of ways you can
keep yourself focused on improving your skills. For some people, creating a reward
system is helpful. For others, staying motivated means finding ways to make the
process more enjoyable. Getting to know the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic
motivation can help you create the ideal system for yourself.

5. Watch online tutorials

There are countless online videos that can teach you whatever skills you are interested
in learning. General video platforms have plenty of free videos that you can watch to get
started. If you are interested in learning from an expert, look for websites that offer
tutorials from professionals or that cater to the field you're interested in.
6. Read blogs and manuals

If you are someone who can learn by reading, search the web for different blogs and
manuals that cover the skill you are interested in learning. Reading a series of articles
can help you learn a variety of tips and advice about your skill of choice. Try to read a
variety of published works so that you can get multiple opinions about the best way to
learn your skill. You may find that one person's advice works better than another's.

7. Attend conferences and seminars

See if your employer will send you to a conference or seminar to learn a particular skill.
Along with getting advice from industry experts, these kinds of events are great for
networking. Connecting with other professionals can help you build your network and
advance your career. You may even find that someone you meet has excellent tips for
developing your skills.

8. Schedule daily practice sessions

When you are ready to get serious about learning a skill, set aside some time for it
every day. Even if this is as little as 20 minutes, repeating the same tasks can help you
start to develop muscle or mental memory. Over a period of time, you may realize that
your skill becomes second nature. Think of the process as learning to ride a bike or
drive a car. With consistent practice, you barely have to think about doing these tasks.

9. Gradually improve difficulty

Start with simpler tasks that you can eventually build upon. For instance, when learning
how to speak a language, you should start with learning basic conversation. As you get
to know conjugations and sentence structure better, you can begin to use more
advanced dialogue. Eventually, you can have fluent conversations with a native
speaker. When you start with a solid foundation, you can progress much more later on.

10. Enroll in a course

Going back to school is an excellent way to develop certain skills. If you're looking to
work full-time while attending school, see if your local community college has either
online or evening courses.
You can also enroll in shorter courses online if you aren't looking to earn a degree.
Some companies offer free and paid courses you can check out.

A/B Testing: What It Is and the Benefits

of It

With the rise of online retail markets for nearly every industry, web development plays a
key part of a company's online success. How you show a product or service online to
encourage a customer to sign up or buy is important and often requires the use of A/B
testing. Knowing more about A/B testing can help you get the right combination of visual
presentation to use online. In this article, we explore what A/B testing is in marketing,
why it is important, the benefits of using it and look at industries that apply this
marketing method to grow success.

What is A/B testing?

A/B testing, or split testing, is a direct comparison between two different versions of an
online marketing asset, like a social media post, webpage, mobile application or
advertising email. For example, an airline company may market the same international
airfare price through different versions of email and social media marketing post over
the course of a week. They can use the data and analysis to determine which
performed best and generated customer engagement, clicks, comments and actual
ticket sales.

Here are digital elements you can conduct A/B testing on:

Design and layout Forms

Colors Headlines

Buttons Copy and sub-headlines

Call to action Site navigation

Continuous A/B testing lets you further figure out your customer audience and what they
like, respond to or are influenced by to improve your success and increase sales and
revenue. For example, the same airline may focus on one element at a time, like
changing the photograph selection, font color or type, headline keywords or button icon
to get a solid understanding of a customer mindset. Learning what change in one or two
variables affects your target audience can impact revenue and engagement.

Why is A/B testing important?

A/B testing is important because it allows you to compare strategies against each other
to see which performs best. You can discover possibilities and learn the best copy,
design, language and other marketing materials best influence consumers to build an
effective marketing campaign. It allows you to generate data about human behavior
without assumptions about customers and gives you solid statistics and insights to
make better business decisions for your website, mobile application or social media
platform.

What are the benefits of A/B testing?

There are several benefits of A/B testing for companies in any industry, since the goal of
A/B testing is to enhance a customer's experience to generate more revenue. Here are
six specific benefits of A/B testing explained:

 Reveal marketing strengths: A/B testing showcases the strengths of an

advertisement, website, sale and other aspects of a marketing campaign. Teams
can learn what works well, what needs improvement and what best suits a
consumer of certain demographics.
 Increase conversion revenue: A/B testing requires little financial investment with
a high revenue result by improving the likelihood of buyers from your current
consumer traffic rather than relying on new customers. Even small A/B testing and
changes can increase conversion rates for more revenue.
 Reduce bounce rates: A/B testing can help you identify reasons customers leave
the website without making a purchase. Improving the user experience through
A/B testing encourages visitors to spend more time with your site, reducing bounce
rates and increasing the likelihood of conversion to a sale.
 Make low risk changes: Using A/B testing allows you to make minimal
modifications to your website to increase revenue rather than a full redesign, which
can cost more and inadvertently affect existing positive user experience features. It
often works off of your existing conversion rates and user experience rather than
starting from the beginning.
 Improve customer experience: The better a customer understands a website
and knows how to use it, the more inclined they are to make a purchase, sign up
for services or become a repeat user. Using A/B testing allows you to learn what
the consumer enjoys and uses on your page or app.
 Feature change: You can use A/B testing to test out the launch of a new feature,
product or service to better predict the outcome. By testing copy, colors, photos
and call to action buttons, you can increase the success of a launch ahead of time
by understanding what customers like.

What are A/B testing best practices?

Best practices for A/B testing often include when, how and in what ways to conduct a
test for your website or application. Here are five examples of best practices for A/B
testing:

Test continuously

A/B testing often gives advantages over competitors, so companies of any size should
continuously run tests for marketing materials like websites, graphics, advertisements,
promotions, language and more.

Use A/B testing for goals

Use A/B testing whenever you have a goal to achieve for your business. For example, if
a social media page is not generating enough customer engagement conversions to
actual sales, consider changing your content or the look of it, like images, font, icons
and call to action words. Creating new ways to influence a customer based on what
they like is key to conversion.

Keep it simple
Simplicity in advertising and marketing often resonate with consumers more. Smaller
amounts of text are easier to understand and get read in completion more than wordy
and distracting text. Soothing, neutral colors are more aesthetically pleasing as opposed
to loud and bright colors.

Start with high-performing material

Make the most of your A/B testing efforts by using marketing materials that already
generate traffic and contribute to buyer leads and conversions. For example, a blog post
with 50% more readership than another is a better investment to encourage more views
than one with little readership. Consider starting with marketing elements like:

 Website homepages
 Product pages
 Banner advertisements
 Cart or basket landing pages
 Social media posts

Glean better insights when established

Because established companies and businesses already have a customer base, A/B
testing is more effective because of customer engagement and traffic. New businesses
can still benefit from A/B testing, though results may not offer the same level of
accuracy until they experience more growth of their customer base.

What are examples of A/B testing?

Examples of A/B testing are in nearly every industry that uses digital marketing. Here
are three examples of common industries and how they apply A/B testing:

E-commerce sites

E-commerce websites and mobile applications rely on A/B testing to provide the best
customer experience possible, since a smooth purchase funnel is crucial to gaining
orders and profit. Companies test out where and how to display shipping costs,
showcase promotions, sales or free shipping,

the shopping cart and checkout page features, visibility and placement of product
reviews and the text font, size, color and placement throughout. Each change or
refinement made is to encourage the consumer to buy or shop again.
One item often in continuous A/B testing is the shopping cart feature, which nearly
every e-commerce site has and the shopping cart icon stays visible no matter which
page you're on. It serves as a reminder for products you've put in your cart but also
encourages you to:

 Keep shopping
 Explore daily deals
 View items on your wish list
 Purchase items in cart
 Turn on the one-click payment feature

The one-click ordering button is commonplace for many well-known online retailers and
results from extensive A/B testing. It allows customers to make a purchase without
visiting their shopping cart entirely once they store default billing and shipping
information into their account. Because one-click ordering is easy, you're more likely to
buy instantly than to go comparison shopping elsewhere.

Travel industry

The travel industry uses A/B testing to increase bookings and ancillary revenue by
testing variations of layout, presentation, colors, progress bar and booking buttons.
From hotels, airlines, home rentals, tour companies and rental cars, the travel industry
runs A/B testing on all of their media platforms, including websites, mobile applications
and social media posts. For example, creating two versions of a landing page to see
which registration is easier to create a login for a home rental app can increase both the
number of hosts and the number of travelers looking for lodging and ultimately increase
revenue from both users.

Streaming service platforms

Streaming service platforms use A/B testing to increase audience, subscriptions, video
views and social sharing, for example. The user experience and personalization
particularly benefits from A/B testing by using your watch history and preferences to
showcase certain titles in the category rows on the video streaming homepage.
Platforms can personalize what titles show for each category to encourage us to watch
and the top watched category features popular titles amongst all users.

Streaming services often test out these personalization pages and layout to determine
which is more user-friendly.
