Transformer Basics and Electromagnetic Induction

1. Step-up transformers have more turns in the secondary coil and fewer in the primary coil, while step-down transformers have more turns in the primary coil and fewer in the secondary coil. When electricity is transformed at high voltages, power loss is less due to less energy being wasted. 2. Rotating a magnet near a coil of wire connected to a lamp induces an electric current in the wire, causing the lamp to light up. Increasing the number of coil turns, using stronger magnets, or increasing current can increase the induced current. 3. Alternating current periodically reverses direction, going from positive to negative and back, while direct current flows only in one direction.

12.1

Step-up transformers have more number of turns in the secondary coil and lesser in primary
coil. Step down transformers have more number of turns in primary coil and less number of
turns in secondary coil.

When electricity is transformed at high voltages, the power loss is less. Lesser energy is
wasted.

When rotating the magnet, the magnetic field causes current to flow in the wire connected

to the lamp as an e.m.f is induced. The flow of current to the lamp causes it to get

lit .
Increase number of turns in the coils

Use stronger magnets

Increase current

Alternating current changes its direction alternatively from positive to negative and
negative to positive.

Alternating current changes its direction of flow. Direct current flows in

only one direction.

3.

Use stronger magnet

Increase current flow

Use thicker wire

V1/N1=V2/N2= 225/4000=4.5/N2

N2=4.5/ (225/4000) 80 turns

= 80

Iron

The current flow in primary coil causes an e.m.f to be induced . There is a current flow in
secondary coil. There fore there is a potential difference between to two terminal

of the secondary coil.

V1/N1=V2/N2 = V1/560=78/910=V1=78/910*560= 48

48 V

When the voltage is high the power loss is less as there is lesser current flow. P=IV,

So as the voltage is more, smaller current is used so energy loss is less

Iron

As the magnet moves towards coil , an emf in induced in the wire due to magnetic
field, so there is a current flow in the wire.

Polarity of end Q is north pole. As magnet goes further into coil , the south pole of it is

near end Q so the opposite polarity is induced

Reverse flow of current

Insert south pole of the magnet into coil first

Direct current flows in one direction, alternating current changes direction

power=current *voltage= 0.75*7.7=

5.8 W
The current is moving in anti clockwise direction , it moves from from point B to A

The motion is upwards and magnetic field id towards right so the current flow will be
perpendicular to magnetic field.

The voltage is increased

The time taken for one cycle decreases
