THE PHOTOELECTRIC EFFECT
Introduction:
The photoelectric effect was first discovered by Heinrich Hertz in 1887
and Einstein explained it with photon concept of light in 1905. Photoelectric effect is the
phenomenon of emission of electrons from the surface of a metal when the light of a
suitable frequency fall on it. The ejected electrons are called the photoelectrons because
they are ejected by means of light. According to Hertz when ultraviolet light shines on
two metal electrodes with a voltage applied across them, the light change the voltage at
which sparking takes place.
Apparatus:
Following apparatus is needed for Photoelectric Effect to occur:
1. A mercury light source
2. A photodiode tube enclosure
3. A power supply for the light source
4. Miscellaneous cords and cables
5. Slider
6. Meter rod
7. A microammeter
Diagram:
Experiment:
In this experiment we first plug-in the light source. Initially when the slider
is at the end of the box the ammeter shows zero current, we start moving the slider
forward until the ammeter starts showing current. We note down the observations of the
current at certain distances from the photocell in the increasing order in the form of a
table and afterwards in the decreasing order and in the end a graph will be plotted
according to the readings.
Increasing Order:
