Active vs Passive Devices Explained

Passive devices do not require an external power source and are used for signal transmission or amplification through directionality. They include basic components like resistors, capacitors, and inductors as well as electromechanical components like resonators, cables, switches, and mechanical devices. Active devices require an external power source and are used for signal amplification, conversion, and controlling electricity flow. They include diodes, transistors, batteries, and electric generators. The document outlines the differences between active and passive electronic components.

PASSIVE PASSIVE DEVICE

-A device that does not require an (electrical)

& source.
-Used for signal transmission, or signal
Active “amplification” by directionality.
-Are those that don’t have the ability to
devices control electric current by means of another
electrical signal.

Two basic characteristics

1. It is either consumes electrical energy
or converts electrical energy into
other forms of energy.
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE 2. Just input the signal and it will work
without external power supply.
ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS
- Are two classes of electronic EXAMPLES OF PASSIVE
components. Both these classes of ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS:
electronic components are different
from each other. BASIC COMPONENTS
- Resistors
- Capacitors
ACTIVE DEVICE - Inductors/coil
-A device that requires an (electrical)source. - Sensors
- Detectors
- are typically used for signal amplification, - Antennas
conversion, etc.
- are those that can control the flow of the
electricity. ELECTROMECHANICAL
COMPONENTS
Two basic characteristics
- Resonators
1. It also consumes electricity itself. - Cables
2. In addition to the input signal, there - Switches
must be an external power supply to - Terminals/Connectors
work properly. - Mechanical Devices such as a fan,
EXAMPLES OF ACTIVE ELECTRONIC lamp.
COMPONENTS:
- Diodes
- Rectifier Diode
- Light Emitting Diode (LED)
- Transistors
- Battery
- Electric Generators

- Devices utilizing a static voltage as

the controlling signal are, not
surprisingly called VOLTAGE
CONTROLLED DEVICES.

- Devices working on the principle of

one current controlling another
current are known as CURRENT
CONTROLLED DEVICES.
