THE FLOOD
The Coastal Packing Company in the town of Visakhapatnam got shattered by cyclone called Hudhud
because of which employee suffered a lot, most lost their homes, and most left the town for good.
As the employees left the town, there is need for more employees in the company and company hire
almost 30 new employees without doing any job analysis and job description which create confusion
in their mind regarding their roles and responsibilities.
When the cyclone news become old, the customer started demanding for the packing material and
not the excuses. The managing director of the organization Karan Naidu realised that something has
to be done otherwise the company will come to an end. Now he has 30 new employees, 20 old
timers and 2 original factory supervisors Kumar and Rahul. There is about 15% wastage of total raw
material and also the productivity of the new employees was below 65% of pre-cyclone days.
After that Mr. Karan decided to contact a consultant with Prof Prathap Rao from local university’s
business school. The consultant created a job questionnaire for old employees specified with their
roles and duties. Both the supervisors and Karan noticed that old employees overemphasized their
duties and tasks that they used to perform to look more dominant. While on the other side, the
customers were demanding for their order deliveries.
The production cycle was divided into 3 shifts of 7 hours each. Each shift had an average of twelve
and thirteen workers. The new workers were undergoing on Job training with the help of old-timers
who were available in each shift. The old timers were so annoyed and upset with the performance of
new employees and complaint that their dead load behaviour has delayed the production and also
influencing the incentives earning negatively.
