one of the greatest travelers of all time. He spent
20 years traveling around Asia and later recorded
his journey. He made new discoveries from China,
including paper money and the use of coal.

Changes in ideas
RENAISSANCE
Those who survived the plague and warfare
from Medieval times wanted to celebrate life.
HUMANISM MOVEMENT
An individual was viewed as important, rather than the community as a whole.
This was a different way of thinking, especially with kings and popes being
placed above all else in Medieval Europe. Individuals were no longer blindly
accepting orders, but thinking for themselves. They were also trying to find a
balance between being a good Christian, but also enjoying life.
Petrarch
(1304-1374) ITALIAN SCHOLAR & POET
Education and subjects like history, philosophy, and literature
were greatly valued during the Renaissance. Petrarch wanted
to revive Greek and Roman ideas. He saved and collected rare,
precious works of literature. He is known for rediscovering
letters written by Cicero, a famous Roman philosopher. He is
also known as the Father of Humanism.
If you were to collect precious literature, paintings, music
or something of any art form, what would you save and
why?

ART
OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE
Many famous painters and sculptures in history came from
the Renaissance in Italy. They studied human anatomy and
created realistic works of art. They also painted using
perspective by painting objects in the background smaller
than the objects in the foreground. They created a sense
of depth, no longer painting flat images shown in Medieval
art. Many of their works also showed human personality,
emotion, and expression.

Advances in architecture
The practices in architecture during the Renaissance were based on the ideas of
classical Rome. These ideas included the domed roofs, rounded arches, and
columns from ancient times. New formulas in mathematics were used to create
buildings. An improved type of hoist was invented during the Italian Renaissance,
which allowed heavy objects to be carried and lifted during construction.
Filippo Brunelleschi
Brunelleschi was a key figure in Italian
Renaissance architecture. He designed domes
for churches. His major projects included the
Dome of the Cathedral of Florence (1419-1436), the
Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze (1419-1480), and
The Exedrae of the Florence Cathedral (1439-1445).
A dva n c es i n ast r o n o m y
Renaissance scholars rediscovered the works of Plato and his ideas of
the universe. They also revisited the Ancient Greek ideas of Aristotle
and Ptolemy. The Ancient Greeks thought the earth was the center of
the universe and that planets orbited around it.
Advances in MATH
Scholars used math to help them better understand the
universe. They designed several math symbols that we
still use today. These symbols include square root
and the positive (+) and negative (-) symbols for
numbers. Geometry was used during the Renaissance
while studying human anatomy, as well as in
architectural design.
