I. INTRODUCTION
In this module, you will be exploring significant concepts about the person’s
holistic development. You will also be dealing with different aspects of life development as
well as the effect to real life situations.
At the end of this weeklong lesson, you will correlate your strengths and
weaknesses that you have discovered within yourself with your previous lesson about self-
concept.

Read the following text closely, then, do the tasks that follow.
Generally, our adult lives are shaped by the experiences and circumstances of our
families, neighborhoods and schools during our formative years. Later in life however, our
motivations to develop ourselves are powered by our desire to fulfill certain needs, as
neatly presented in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.[CITATION Von18 \l 1033 ]
Life is multi-dimensional and complex. For the individual to attain optimum well-
being, he has to improve his personality. This can be done by focusing in all aspects of
personal development and not merely by a selected domain. These five aspects are
discussed below.
The five aspects of life are given a situational example in the previous activity for
you to be aware and determine which aspects need to work on for improvement. Here are
the five aspects of personal development: 1) physical, 2) mental, 3) Emotional, 4) Social,
and 5) Spiritual.

Physical
Body is the most important aspect as it binds all other factors. As it is said, “A
healthy body is a healthy mind” and “health is wealth”. This is basic for success.
Please do not underestimate the importance of keeping your body in shape. It’s
about much more than just looking and feeling good about yourself – it is also about living
a life of health and longevity, and keeping your mind fit as well. You can have everything
else in your life figured out, but if you don’t maintain your health you won’t be around
very long to enjoy it.[CITATION Ste09 \l 1033 ]
It is said that if you are presentably looking you have an edge for a lot of
opportunities. This is the reason that makes many people to be focused on their physical
appearance. It might be true, but an oddly looking person can even be happy and
successful by enhancing what qualities that they already have like intellectual, good
behavior, public relations and so others. The physical concern of a person is simply
referred as concern on a tangible aspect of self-development.
Mental
Individuals think and reason before they act. Thus, an understanding of how
people think can be helpful if we are to explain and predict their behavior. Behavior,
listening, personality these all factors basically shaped by thinking.

Our intellectual ability helps us resolve even a difficult problem at immediate
cause. Yet, everyone has the ability to do so but learning and thinking would improve our
reasoning that will lighten our future.
Emotional
Emotional or Psychological refers how thinking, feeling, and behaving interact and
happen in a person
It’s important that we continue to use our brains to learn new things and challenge
ourselves, especially as we get older. Education makes you a better and more well-
rounded person overall, and it’s an essential component to all self-improvement.
Stress management is essential for mental health and emotional intelligence. If you
don’t know how to manage your stress in a healthy way, it can often spillover into your
thoughts, feelings, and behaviors by making you more sensitive, irritable, and bothered
(even by little things).[CITATION Ste09 \l 1033 ]
Social
Healthy relationships play an important role to happiness and well-being. “No one
is an island” means that we need people to be part of our personality development. We
have to develop rapport with family, neighbors, friends, and others so we can have
satisfaction in our dealings with them. Remember that actions of an individual are
responses which are based from the situation that others have initiated. So, behavior and
how people react is influence by social factors. People change behaviors as resulted to
learning from different sources.
Whether it’s in the real world or on the internet, the same basic rules apply to all
healthy and positive relationships: be kind to others, treat them with respect, listen to
their viewpoints, and don’t respond by attacking or insulting.[CITATION Ste09 \l 1033 ] If you
practice these attitudes, you will have happiness.
Spiritual
Many refer to this area as religion. But, it is not simply means that way but rather
this means your real purpose of life. This also includes conscientiousness which means
likely to be organized, systematic, careful, thorough, responsible, self- disciplined, and
achievement-oriented.
Believing that life is good, and that everything happens for a reason. Even if it is a
positive or negative experience, you learned lesson from it. You should value it as it molds
your personality.
Religion believes that the purpose of the human life is to serve the creator of all
things. Several theories in psychology propose that we ultimately give meaning to our
lives. Whether we believe that life’s meaning is pre-determined or self-directed, to grow in
spirit is to realise that we do not merely exist. We do not know the meaning of our lives at

birth; but we gain knowledge and wisdom from our interactions with people and from our
actions and reactions to the situations we are in.
As we discover this meaning, there are certain beliefs and values that we reject and
affirm. Our lives have purpose. This purpose puts all our physical, emotional, and
intellectual potentials into use; sustains us during trying times; and gives us something to
look forward to---a goal to achieve, a destination to reach. A person without purpose or
meaning is like a drifting ship at sea. [CITATION Top \l 1033 ]

In the previous activity, you have identified your aspects of development and have
reacted in the given situation. Now, you will assess your strengths and weaknesses in
terms of different aspect of development and tell whether you are dealing with each aspect
positively or negatively.
Develop a plan of action which helps you grow as a person. Select two best aspects
of development that you are strong and list down ways on how to improve these further.
Likewise, list another least (2) two aspects which need to work on for at least you will

aspect will probably make you unhappy. Do not just focus on your
strengths but rather work on with your weaknesses for at least you
will develop self-confidence and self-esteem.

You have currently facing a difficult problem as your parents were just
separated for financial reasons. Your elder sister who still in third year college
became desperate of the situation and so decided to live with her boyfriend who
is still studying. You are forced to live with your grandparent.

Physical Concern: “Sana all Maganda/Gwapo”. We teenagers often concerns with our
physical looks. It seems that if someone is good looking she/he usually catches attention
that we usually envy of.

been always compared with another sibling by their parents for having been academic

would say that my elder sister looks better than me because her resemblance is
more of my (either mother or father) who is (having good physical looks as of
their nose, eyes, skin color, hair texture, body structure and height and other).
Being compare for having your sibling looks like that would cause insecurity
but looking at it as motivation will be helpful. If someone has not presentable as
others then improve his/her looks in other way around. Like for example being
smart and behaving in a pleasant manner.

traits for what is it would help you move on and improve the way it is. Have a
positive outlook. Anyway the medical advancement can help you improve the
physical looks. You might have that look because it has a purpose. There are
personalities who are not good-looking but become successful for their oddly

skill is shown in the way people’s reasoning, solving problems, and insights. It

edge in being successful and having contentment.

well.

Possible Answer: Body is the framework of our personality. Making our body
healthy makes other factors do the purposes. It is necessary for an individual to
observe good eating habits and food preferences should be based from the needs
of his body.

challenges, difficulties that cause stress. But, adaptation is the basic property
that you have to own in order for you to survive.

Case study
Problem usually come and goes as part of the life aspect. Everyone experiences
problem but in different degree. Sometimes, even persons with similar problem have
different degree of effect on each individual.
The situation might be difficult but I do not let pain transform itself into fear. Look
at what you‟re looking at. Don‟t wrap yourself up with all the negativities of the world. In
building self-esteem, we must learn how to make the best out of worst situations.
No other thing that I can do but to live my grandparents and move on. Just being
positive and think that everything happens for a purpose. Make this bad experience as a
motivation to improve yourself. Work on with the dreams. Have the skills of
determination, focus, problem-solving, creativity and other that will help you a better
person.

If you are a person who cannot control your emotions/feelings your thought will
highly be affected. You may alter your brain functions as you may miss the
signals.
Example, an aggressive person will always lead to pain as they could always
hurt someone’s emotion or even physical pain.

Possible Answer: As a teenager we almost have the same experiences, maybe good
or bad. In good experiences we felt so happy and thus acquire positivity in dealing
with life. But, during hardship we sometimes felt down and need someone to help
us. AT the times we are down our physical activities are also limited. The five
aspect of personality are affected as they are interconnected.
If we are exposed to a new environment and new experiences we usually take time
learning to accept and adjust with the situation.
