Năm 2020, cán cân tài chính của Mỹ (BFA) < 0 nghĩa là Phần tiền vốn chuyển vào mỹ
nhiều hơn tiền chuyển ra gọi là thặng dư vốn và chiếm -5.777 triệu đô. Cán cân
vãng lai của Mỹ âm là do phần nhập khẩu nhiều hơn xuất khẩu nên nguồn bù đắp
cho phần thâm hụt là nguồn thặng dư của tài khoản vốn và tài chính. Trường hợp
này, cán cân tổng thể của Mỹ âm tức Mỹ đang là con nợ từ các nguồn đầu tư nước
ngoài, nếu tiếp tục thâm hụt cao thì Mỹ đối mặt nguy cơ vỡ nợ và rơi vào khủng
hoảng tài chính.
