A SHORT HISTORY OF REVELL

It all began back in the early 1950's, when Revell introduced the world 's first scale model plastic car
kits, forerunners of today's more advanced and highly detailed plastic models.
From these humble beginnings in Venice, California, Revell has grown to occupy a 10Y2 acre
headquarters which employs over 500 people. Revell products are now manufactured in eight
countries and sold in more than eighty. In its 30 year history, Revell has produced more than
242,000,000 units.
Revell now manufactures over 200 different model kits, including miniature reproductions in exact
detail of just about everything that rolls, flies, or floats. Revell also manufactures fine quality
Home Race Sets and packaged crafts, 3-D Yarn ArFM and FabricArt.TM
Though a Revell · kit can be purchased in a hobby, chain , or department store for from under $1.00
to $18.00, the master mold for the model costs between $50,000 and $150,000. Every proposed kit
requires research and development, planning, engineering, manufacturing, packaging, advertising and
marketing. Its selection must be exacting:
Just what does it take to manufacture a model kit? The way it happens at Revell goes
something like this ... you the consumer, often write in and suggest a model kit you would
like us to make. These suggestions are passed along to our Advanced Development
Department, who evaluates the suggestions and make recommendations to the Revell
management team. If the management team approves the project, they forward the
project to the Revell engineering staff. An engineer is then assigned to the project and
is responsible for designing this model in such a way that it will be economical to
manufacture and practical to assemble by you.
From detailed engineering specifications, a hand-built original model must be created.
From th is original model, plaster and epoxy molds are made. These molds are then used
as patterns for the steel tools and dies which are cut on pantograph machines. Finally,
the steel dies are hand finished, placed in a mold base, and installed in an injection
molding machine. This machine can turn out a kit in twenty seconds that has been in
the research , development and engineering stages for over a year.

For Assembling, Painting,
And Detailing Any Plastic Model.
Assemble model and apply decals.
This technique will provide you with
an attractive model of the real thing.
However, if you want a more realistic,
miniature reproduction of the real
thing, please read on.

To start, yOu'll need these.

TQols: hobby knife; screw driver; tweezers;
half-round and round jewelers files; scis-
sors; liquid and tube cement; surfacing
putty; Scotch-brand "MagiC" tape; "Micro-
Set" (for decals); #001, #1, and #3 sable-
hair paint brushes; and paint in bottles
and/or spray can as outlined in kit instruc-
tions.

As parts are needed, they should be cut - not broken - from the
molding rack or "sprue" a fraction of an inch above actual part.
Cut or shave away excess plastic on raised seams and around
edges of parts (round jewelers file can clean away excess from
hinge holes, wheel bearings, etc.). Check fit of any moving parts.

Check the box lid and/or photos of the real item to see where
any seams appear. Usually, seams between model parts should
be filled in with surfacing putty.

Use the half-round jewelers file to smooth

off the body filler flush with the surface of
the parts after filler has dried at least over-
night. Open any assembly holes.

Decals, Chrome
&Clear Parts

When decal slides on paper backing, position on model. Hold For tight decal fit on irregular surfaces dab on "Micro Set" to
decal down with knife tip and pull paper from beneath it. Use soften decal film. Decals are best preserved with overcoat of
damp facial tissue to roll and dab water and air bubbles. spray like "Clear" (high-gloss) or "DuIlCote".

Hold window in place, apply drop of liquid cement at each corner

with a toothpick. Clear sections should be glued last as over-
sprays will cause "frosting".

Painting & Finishing;
Aircraft

Masking off areas for best separation of color is done with

"Magic" tape or paper patterns tightly taped down.

Canopy lines are best accomplished through masking. Cover "Feathered" edges on camouflage designs are done with holes
entire canopy. Cut tape from framework lines, spray, let dry, re- irregularly punched in a piece of paper held a fraction of an inch
move tape. above model surface and sprayed.

"Blotch" patterns can duplicated by dabbing with a fine-pore

sponge (a slot car "closect cell" tire works well).

15.
Detailing Ships
The information which follows is about ships because they
generally benefit most from more detailing. The tips
snown have many applications which can be used on any
category of Revell model. Stretched sprue can be used for
airplane guy wires or automotive engine detailing as well
as for ship railings. The "striping" described below can
be used for cars, planes, ships, etc.,

For the appearance of wood, paint basic brown color, then brush
or rag-rub on a thinned down mixture of a drop of tan paint in
an ounce of thinner. Flat (no-gloss) is best.

The filigree on Revell's kits is raised above the rest of the sur- Hobby shops and drafting supply stores often stock "drafting"
face. It's easier to paint if you use the side of a #000 brush to tape in a wide choice of colors and widths. Tape makes striping
color the raised portions. ships or cars simple.

Hold a section of the scrap molding rack, or "sprue", over a
candle flame and rotate slowly. When plastic softens, stretch Into
thin line for ship rigging, aerials, etc.

fying and rewarding hobby.

and a reproduction in miniature that
will look good and last for years is
