CHARMROSE BIANCA SONGCO - Post-Synchronous Activity - Week 6

The document summarizes four sources related to the effects of academic workload on grade 12 STEM students' time management: 1. A 2019 article by David Kernohan on workload modeling in academia. 2. A 2020 study by Kin Cheung et al. comparing workload and performance of transfer vs native students. 3. A 2021 local study by 12 authors on optimizing workload during COVID-19 and its effects on mental health. 4. Part 1: Answer the question

How can I dispense a comprehensive social commentary through literature review?

A literature review is a study that has been summarized and utilized in a new
study based on prior research on related issues. This is being utilize when developing a
new study subject to act as evidence or proof that the information created exists,
earning the readers' trust and making the work increasingly reliable. It develops the
familiarity between the two relevant research topics before conducting a new
investigation, allowing us to determine whether the present investigation has previously
been done as to what is unknown with the topic. Researchers can identify ways to
significantly explain the main scope of the research by comparing two relative research
topics. Moreover, it allows the gaps included in the literature more visible to the
researchers, which may lead to the development of more effective solution,
assessment, recommendation, and intervention tools. This might assist the researchers
in looking through the entire study and determining what the weak points are in order to
increase their awareness.

Part 2: Research one (1) source for each of the following parts of chapter 2. Make
sure it is relevant to your research title.

The Effects of Academic Workload on Grade 12 STEM Students Affecting

their Time Management in Escuela De Sophia of Caloocan, Inc.

1. Related Foreign Literature, Author, and Date of Publication

The title of the article was known as “A beginner’s guide to academic workload
modelling” and was electronically published on November 03, 2019. The text was
written by David Kernohan, an Associate Editor of Wonkhe. Until June 2016, he worked
at Jisc as a programme manager and senior codesign manager, after being seconded
from HEFCE in 2006. He has also worked for the University of Glamorgan (now the
University of South Wales). His work introduces the workload planning, a challenging
but slightly recognized technique that is a significant aspect of academic life. The
objective of the study was to directly understand at a high standard what remains to be
improved and what is being accomplished, two frequently directly opposed concepts,
and would then guarantee that resources are distributed appropriately. Regarding the
wide range of jobs performed by academics, data is rarely gathered at the local level,
and never at the national level. The article also stated that sometimes showing that
workloads are unreasonable can be critical in presenting a grievance around stress.
This is easier to do if there is an agreed or widely accepted workload model.

2. Related Foreign Study, Author, and Date of Publication

The research article was entitled “Comparison of workload and academic

performances of transfer and native students in an Asian educational context”, written
by Kin Cheung, Eric S. W. Chan, Jeremy Ng, Hilda Tsang and Hong-va Leong (2020).
Kin Cheung is an Assistant Professor of Asian Religions. He studies a Nursing School
in The Hong Kong Polytechnic University located in Kowloon, Hong Kong, same as to
Jeremy Ng and Hilda Tsangare. Although, the authorship of the research article is
shared to Eric S. W. Chan, he attends in School of Hotel and Tourism Management in
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University located in Kowloon, Hong Kong. The authorship
was also shared to Hong-va Leong, an Associate Professor, Department of Computing.
Dr Leong graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara and joined the
Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The research was electronically published on
November 18, 2020. Its main objective was to present a discussion and implications in
relation to transfer shock and transfer student success, and workloads and academic
performances. This is to prove that community college education does not always result
in academically inferior degree-seeking individuals, and that it is a viable road to
bachelor studies.

3. Related Local Study, Author, and Date of Publication

The study was entitled "Optimizing Students‟ Workload and its Effects on their
Mental Health during COVID-19 Pandemic." written by 12 authors including Alexa
Denise Abracero, Rona Therese L. Alejandro, Eliza Joyce M. Balderrama, Ulysses
Gene R. Beltran, Junbert, Matthew G. Castillo, Maria Edlyn T. Mago, Kristian G.
Sambile, and Christopher DC. Francisco. The research was electronically published on
January 1, 2021. Their research claims that the students' workload was defined as
"moderate"; furthermore, the status of the students' mental health was described as
"sometimes," implying that the workload does not have a significant impact on the
students' mental health; and third, the study had important implications including
teachers should restrict pupils' academic responsibilities, and schools should decrease
the amount of school days. There should be a program in schools that discusses mental
health care. The objective of the study was to directly discover the effects of workload
on students’ mental health to develop more effective assessment, education, and
intervention tools.

4. Related Local Literature, Author, and Date of Publication

The article was entitled "Too much work, too little time." Joeie Cuerpo, an author
of this article and a grade 11 student of Corpus Christi Senior High School taking up
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS). He is the Associate Editor-in-Chief of
Tambuli, the official student publication of Corpus Christi School. The main objective of
the study was to obtain answers regarding “How come students before had the luxury of
playing after school but at the same time are still able to comply with the requirements
given to them, whereas my generation is so harassed with schoolwork?” Too much
work, too little time. This leads him to an idea that the academic stress that students are
facing is most likely part of the senior high system's difficulties in life. It should be
highlighted, however, that if a student struggles to cope with academic stress,
significant effects such as psychosocial and mental health problems may result.
Considering the system's and, more importantly, students' difficulties, the topic of
whether students will get the most out of the senior high curriculum should be
considered.
