SECTION I
PURPOSE, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1-l INTRODUCTION

l-2 This manual contains operating and maintenance instructions for the single-
pen (no alarms) Pneumatic Circular Chart Recorder manufactured by TOTCO,
Norman, Oklahoma. Information in this manual is sufficient for installation,
calibration, operation and maintenance of these units without the use of special
tools and test equipment.

l-3 PURPOSE

l-4 The pneumatically operated circular recorder (See Figure l-l) may be used,
as a subsystem, to record any parameter from a sensor, or similar unit,
which delivers a full scale pneumatic output signal of 3-15 psig (20.7-103.4 kPa).
For oil field applications, the recorder may be used for recording a number of
drilling parameters. Table l-l lists some applications with related range and
recorder chart data.

l-5 DESCRIPTION

l-6 CIRCULAR RECORDER. The recorder (Figure l-2) comprises a 24-hour clock-
driven mechanism which turns a 24-hour recording chart; a 3-15 psig
(20.7-103.4 kPa) bellows assembly which proportionally actuates the recording pen
through 0 to 100% of scale via a mechanical linkage; a replaceable ink cartridge
(pen) and chart pan. All components are contained in a weather protected case whose
cover incorporates a glass so that the chart can be seen without opening the cover.

3-15 psig (20.7-103.4 kPa) input signal connections are made at the bottom of the
recorder. Recorders, available with either a wallmount or floorstand are normally
installed inside a doghouse or close to the drillers station.

l-7 OPERATION

l-8 RECORDING PEN. 3-15 psig (20.7-103.4 kPa) signals from the measuring
sensor, with which the recorder is interconnected, are fed to the recorder
bellows assembly. A shaft in the bellows assembly activates the linkage mechanism
to which the recording pen is connected. With increasing input signal, the pen is
driven upscale. 0 to 100% of chart scale is directly proportional to the 3-15 psig
(20.7-103.4 kPa) range of input signal. The recording chart, which is directly
installed on a chart pan, is driven by a 24-hour clock. A key is supplied for
winding the clock every 7 days.

may be secured to a wall or counter top, or mounted on a floorstand. See
Figure 2-l for installation dimensions and pneumatic connection.

2-4 PNEUMATIC HOOKUP

2-5 Use l/4" OD (6.35mm) tubing supplied, to make system connections. Before
making connections, blow out all tubing with clean, dry, instrument
quality air. The pneumatic connection to the recorder is identified at the bottom
of the recorder (See Figure 2-l). Interconnect recorder with 3-15 psig (20.7-103.4
kPa) input signal source from measuring sensor. Route tubing away from walkways
and machinery where it could be damaged. After system air has been turned on, if
possible, check for leaks using commercial soapless lather.
