Telehealth primarily uses videoconferencing
equipment. This is an interactive technology and enables
patients and health care providers at distant sites to interact
“face-to- face”. Technological advances now allow for these
interactions to occur using a desktop computer. An
alternative to real-time telehealth is called “store-and-
forward”, in which clinical information is sent (like email) to a
provider at a distant site for their evaluation. This does not
allow for a dialogue between the patient and provider.
The nurse in the community and the hospital-based nurse
require similar information to deliver the required patient
care. both practitioners require patient demographic data
,post medical history ,diagnosis, laboratory , radiology test
.results ,treatment and care plan
Additionlly,in the hospital or community setting ,delivery of
patient care facilitated by the availability of patient teaching
materials,policies and procedures,drug and treatment
information, technical data, community services listings and
.current contact directions

Definitions
Telenursing : is defined as the practice of nursing over
distance using telecommunications technology. National
Council of State Board of Nursing (NCSBN), 1997
Telenursing:is the use of telemedicine/telehealth
technology to deliver nursing care and conduct nursing
practice. Encyclopedia of Nursing Research, Fitzpatrick J.
ed., 1999
Telenursing :refers to the use of telecommunications
technology in nursing to enhance patient care. International
Council of Nurses (ICN), 2001
Telenursing:-is the delivery, management , coordination of
care and services provided via telecommunications
technology within the domain of nursing. American
Association of Ambulatory Care Nursing(AAACN). 200

Telehealth objective
Telehealth brings specialized medical care directly to the people
who need it.
Telehealth can:
Prevent unnecessary delays in receiving treatment.
Reduce or eliminate travel expenses.
Reduce or eliminate the separation of families during difficult
and emotional times.
Allow patients to spend less time in waiting rooms.
Component of Teleheath
The technologies and systems used for telehealth vary
greatly from one application to another .However, each
application, even the simplest.contains at least three
.components
Adevice or means to capture ,process, and store
content(input)-whether sound only, electronic or
images,tracings, alpha-numeric data ,or a combination.
Content and a means to transfer or exchange the content
(throughput) communications ,telecommunications,or
network technologies of all kinds and their associated
software.
A means for receiving ,storing and displaying the content
(output) possibly a video monitor, a computer file server ,or
a recorder of some kind .
6
Factors are influencing the development of
telehealth
Aging population: the needs of aging healthcare consumers have
initiated efforts to develop and adopt better telehealth systems
outside institutional walls ,systems that would be better geared
for home –based applications.
Cost containment: telehealth systems are facilitating
redistribution of health care services ,reducing duplication,
reducing numbers of drug interactions and inappropriate
prescriptions, and reducing patient and professional travel.
Access:demand is increasing for equitable access to health care
services for inhabitants of isolated geographic areas .
Technology :ever more powerful technologies and
communications band widths are becoming available at
decreasing costs.
Demand:the increasing consumer demand for wellness and health
information of all kinds has increased access to the Inter net and
World Wide Web .
7
Methods of Teleheath
The use of advanced telecommunications technologies to
exchange health information and provide health care services
across geographic, time, social, and cultural barriers:
Telephone, radio, other voice modalities;
Picture phones, teleconferencing;
Fax, emails;
Computers for data/imaging;
Interactive video
The underlying concept of telehealth has traditionally described the
use of technology to provide clinical medical services when the
healthcare provider and patient are separated by geographic
distance. In recent years, the term telehealth has risen as a
favorable expansion upon telehealth. Telehealth not only includes
clinical services but also non-clinical medical services such as
education, research, and administrative functions.
Telehealth is generally described as the use of communication
equipment to link health care practitioners and patients in different
locations. This technology is used by health care providers for
many reasons, including increased cost efficiency, reduced
transportation expenses, improved patient access to specialists
and mental health providers, improved quality of care, and better
communication among providers.
8
Appliction of Telehealth
There are many applications for providing health care or telehealth
across a distance, including:
Monitoring patients with chronic conditions or at-risk
populations.
Medical care for home-bound patients or those in rural,
remote locations.
Access to medical care in areas with provider shortages.
Availability of expert consultations via satellite for individuals
inaccessible locations.
Currently, telehealth is practiced in many settings, such as rural
hospitals, school districts, home-health settings, nursing homes.
Telehealth is well-established in certain disciplines, such as
radiology and dermatology, and is being expanded in other
disciplines, for example, home telehealth, mental telehealth, ocular
telehealth, teledermatology, telepathology, telerehabilitation. It is
being utilized further for specific populations, including individuals
who are live in remote locations.

Challenges Related to Telehealth
Although the potential for telehealth applications to cotribute to
healthcare is unlimited, several challenges remain to be
. addressed
Obsolescence:many of the technologies have ashort shelf
life.rapid obsolescence is amajor concern for managers
and adminseterators because most informations
technologies come in 18-36 months cycles ,each bringing
significant increases in processing speeds ,flexiblity, and
storage capacity and decrease in price .
Access:even with user acceptance and available
funding ,telehealth is not accessible to any and all who
need it .
Documentation standards :telehealth documentation
standard must be developed for use by all providers to
ensure ausful and usable patient record.
Data security:confidentiality,privacy,and security issues
related to the collection ,storage, and transimission of
patiet information must be resolved to the satisfaction of
professionals and consumers alike.

SUMMARY
The devolopment of inexpensive ,reliable telecommunications
technology enables health profissionals ,patients, and consumers to
access health informations, healthcare resources ,and health service
. delivary directly from and in their homes
Telehealth applications exist as discrete nursing interventions and
provide pathways for nurses to reatch patients and provide nursing
.interventions
Nurses can use technology to assisst them in providing home care and
. in-home monitoring
Networks serve as educational vehicles whereby nurses can reach
patients and clients with health promotion, disease and preventions
.,information,and illness management nursing intervention
Telehealth applications hold ,great promise for extending the ability of
nurses to reach individuals in communities and the communities them
.selves
