LET’S DO IT!
Activity 37: Learning Analysis
This exercise will allow us to test your comprehension skills about the subject you've
read. Expose any sentence that links with environmental degradation.

Ex. "If I don't get or use this resource, someone else will"
Many people believe that every resources should be use in order to serve
its purpose. It's a mindset that everybody is entitled to use it because if not, others will
that leads to destruction and severe damages to the natural resources that we have. We
need to be contented of what resources we have, protect and conserve our natural
resources.

1. "Throwaway society"
It is a human society strongly influenced by consumerism. Most of us don’t
care about the little things we do such as where we become irresponsible
of our own wastes, we neglect to use waste receptacles, trash bins that is
usually available in different places that we go.

2. "The little bit I use or pollute is not enough to matter"

This is such a poor mindset a human can have. It only means that people
that have this mindset do not care about their surroundings at all that they
will just let those things to ruin the mother nature.

LET’S TRY SOME MORE!
Activity 38: Where does my trash go!
Improper waste management is one of the many issues facing our society today,
which contributes to contamination of the air, water and soil. Illustrate two waste disposal
situations, one leading to a problem and the other as being right. Place your answer in the
box provided below.

Leads to a problem...
The generation of today is often called a "Throwaway Society" where
we become irresponsible of our own wastes, we neglect to use waste
receptacles, trash bins that is usually available in different places that we go. A
clear example is when an individual throw a piece of trash anywhere may it be
in the river, an open dump or on the sidewalks. Eventually these wastes will
lead to water and air pollution, flood and even landslides.

The solution/proper waste disposal...

These problem cannot be solved unless taken action. By that, we should all
start with ourselves. We should know how to reuse, recycle and reduce the
things that can be transformed in some other ways. We should also make
effective alternative ways of waste disposal and management that can’t ruin
mother nature.

LET’S SUM IT UP!
Anthropogenic Impact and Garbage Problem today...
Direction: The world today is in great battle to different environmental degradations. We
human beings are the primary source of these problems but of course we are also the
solution. You will make a campaign slogan about environmental issues.
Use the following:
I. Short bond paper
2. Coloring materials (crayons, paint etc.)
3. Write your name, course, year and section on the upper left of the paper.
Note: at the lower portion of the paper, make a SHORT description of your slogan that
sums up all the things that you have learned in this lesson.

Criteria for Campaign slogan:

40%- creativity of the slogan
30%- relevance to the pressing issues of the environment
15%- uniqueness of the presentation
15%-neatness of the presentation
LET’S EXTEND AND LINK!
Activity 41: Community Evaluation
What do you know about the waste in your community? How does the community deal
with their wastes? Use the questions below to guide your research.

1. What does your city/municipality do with the collected trash?

The city conducted several investigation vis-à-vis waste characterization which is
necessary in determining the type and volume of waste essential for sourcing
out appropriate technology of treating and disposing biodegradable, non-
biodegradable and special waste (toxic and hazardous).
[Link]

2. What best practices you have in your community about waste disposal for
others to follow?
Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Program on which the Eco-
Center being one of its program components was established to address
the ever increasing waste generation problem.

3. Does my city/municipality implement the Republic Act 9003 or The Solid Waste
Management Act? If yes, what are the programs you have identified in your
community. If no, would you recommend this to your locality to be
implemented? Why?

YES. As mandated by R.A. 9003, LGU is required to divert 25% of its disposed waste, thus
the city initiated to establish an “Eco-Center” which is an integrated solid waste
management system where vital facilities were installed for the mass recycling/composting
of biodegradable materials and the land-filling of non-bio residual wastes to enable the city
to comply with the mandatory waste diversion and installation of final disposal facility
(sanitary landfill). The approach or technology used in project implementation is entirely a
pioneering application since the system is an integration of a waste processing area for
biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, a sanitary landfill utilizing indigenous local
materials such as; clay for the lining system and gravel drain instead of HDPE liner and
leachate piping collection and other innovative approach on the project.
LET’S LOOK BACK!

We have discussed, Anthropogenic Impact and Garbage Problems from our previous
lesson. Before we proceed to our next topic let's have a brief review on what we have teamed.

Instruction: In each number fill in the blank with the word that correctly answers the
description.

OPE DUMPS 1. The garbage disposal method that allows slow decomposition to take place in
the site and its eventual conversion into a park or wildlife area.

SOLID WASTE [Link] practice of reusing disposed materials such as glass, plastics, metals.

NUCLEAR WASTE 3. The most harmful forms of waste that may persist for half a Century to
thousands of years and may cause cancers and mutations.

OCEAN DUMPING 4. Wrong disposal practice that has been done for decades in the belief that
the oceans are a bottomless dumpsite.

INCINERATION 5. An alternative method of waste disposal, which reduces the volume of

waste by 90% and removes 99% of the toxins.
