Material Recovery Facility Impact Study

The chapter summarizes foreign and local literature and studies on material recovery facilities. It discusses how MRFs can calculate mass flows, energy requirements, costs, and recovery rates for recyclables. MRFs are seen to have positive environmental impacts by reducing waste. Locally, studies find MRFs can provide community income from recycling and proper waste sorting. The chapter also outlines the research design which used a survey questionnaire distributed to 15 residents of Barangay Imatong to understand how the local MRF affects the community.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

This chapter dealt with the foreign and local literature and foreign and

local studies.

Foreign Literature

According to Phillip N. Pressley et al. (2014). Analysis of material recovery

facilities for use in life-cycle assessment. calculate mass flows, energy

requirements, and cost per unit mass input for each MRF type. The mass flows

were used to calculate recovery rates for all recyclable materials, which are

important in solid waste LCAs that consider downstream processing of sorted

waste. Electricity and rolling stock fuel requirements were calculated, which can

be used to estimate the associated emissions. Moreover, MRF has big effect in

the society that can save one’s life and the Mother Nature. This should be

implemented in every area that totally changes the environment.

Local Literature

According to [Link] (2015) There shall be established a Material

Recovery Facility in every barangay. It shall receive waste for final sorting

according to its type for composting and recycling. The Material Recovery Facility

should be implemented in every barangay it can give the residence of the

community works that can be their source of income by recycling those materials.

It shall be designed to receive, sort, process and store compostable and

recyclable material efficiently and in an environmentally sound manner.

Foreign Study

According to Mazanti and Zoboli (2014) Solid waste management has

become one major concern in environmental issues. This is particularly true to

urban areas where population is rapidly going and the amount of waste

generated is increasing like never before. Waste generation increase

proportionally to this number of population and in creating the needs of effective

management. The Material Recovery Facility has big effect that in every

community needs to have that kind of implementation.

Local Study

According to Hoombweg and Bhada (2012). All around the world, there is

a worsening problem regarding solutions and actions done for proper waste

management. To contribute to the effort of solving this problem, this study will

discuss about the solid waste management of the areas of Cebu down to

Mandaue City. The amount of solid waste produced in the Philippines is high and

continuously growing.

The arising concerns and issues of garbage and wastes, the waste

management system of developing countries and how they’ve dealt with the

issues of the waste management. Laws and ordinances implemented wether

continued until in the present and also to evaluate the waste management

system.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers used were survey research method. As a method in

collecting data thru giving a questionnaire checklist to the respondents to

determine the connection of the research to the study.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study were the 15 different people of barangay

Imatong. The respondents were described in terms of name and age.

The people of barangay were used as the respondents of the study

because the researchers were aiming on how the Implementation of Materials

Recovery Facility affects the people of barangay.

Procedure of the Study

It begins with our lesson with Inquiries, Investigation and Immersion. The

students were group by their teacher. Each group was instructed to do three (3)
10

different titles and passed it to the teacher then the teacher asked each group to

choose the best title and what they really want to study. “The Level of

Effectiveness of Material Recovery Facility in Barangay Imatong” was chosen.

The people of barangay Imatong were chosen to be their respondents.

The selected people of Barangay Imatong were answered the questionnaire

checklist. The researcher came up to choose the people of Barangay Imatong to

be their respondents because they think they were the one that able and saw

how the Material Recovery Facility affects the community of Barangay Imatong.

Data Analysis Method and Findings

This dealt with the interpretation of methods and findings that the

researchers used in conducting the research this includes the tabulation of

gathered response which are the respondents profile and the affiliated

questions.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND SOURCES OF DATA

This chapter presents the presentation, analysis and interpretation of data

based on the questions design to distinguish the level of effectiveness on the

implementation of Material Recovery Facility.

The Profile of the Respondents

Table 2 presents the frequency and percentage distribution of profile of

the respondents’ in terms of the following variables.

were female with a total number of 8 or 53.33 percent and males with a total

number of 7 or 46.67 percent. Most of them were in 27-49 with a total number of

4 to 2 which is equivalent to 26.66 percent and 13.33 percent.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions and

recommendations of the study.

Summary of Findings

Based on the analysis and interpretation of data the findings were

summarized.

1. Profile of the Respondents

Most of the respondents were female which has 8 respondents. Majority of

them were 34-49 years old.

2. The Affiliated Questions on the Level of Effectiveness of Material

Recover Facility

Majority of has a neutral reaction on the effectiveness of Material

Recovery Facility which they helps a lot on implementing the kind of program

of the government. They have a really good feedback on this kind of program.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, it can be concluded that;

1. The implementation of Material Recovery Facility has big effect on the

community of barangay Imatong.

2. The residents of barangay Imatong has very effective and help them to

lessen their garbage in the community. The residents also benefits in

terms of financial needs they recycled the recovered material into

something new.
15

Recommendations

1. The barangay should continue that program.

2. The barangay must assess the residents on how to turn it into an

innovative and useful things.

3. The residents must continue to help the barangay to lessen the

garbage in the community.
