while the gas giants of our Solar System are still putting on a show
in our skies (see last month’s article in e PIlOt), another
“brilliant, nebulous cloud” has joined the show this month. I mean
the Andromeda Galaxy, originally catalogued as the “Andromeda
nebula” and variously described through the course of the last
millennium as a “nebulous smear”, “little cloud”, and “great
nebulae”. why such descriptions? Because it is believed to be one
of the farthest objects visible to the naked eye from dark-sky sites,
and can be seen from urban areas even with binoculars! A great
debate raged among astronomers early in the 20th century as to the
nature of Andromeda and other such “nebulae” (are they internal
to the milky way, or are they galaxies of their own right, external
to it?), and it was edwin Hubble who settled the debate in 1925
by estimating the distance to Andromeda to be so great that it had
to lie outside our own galaxy! today, the distance to the
Andromeda Galaxy (also known as messier 31 or m31) is estimated
to be ~2.5 million light-years and it is the nearest major galaxy to
the milky way. e galaxy’s name stems from the area of earth’s
sky in which it appears, the constellation of Andromeda, which
itself is named after the ethiopian (or Phoenician) princess who
was the wife of Perseus in Greek mythology.
e Andromeda Galaxy was formed roughly 10 billion years ago
from the collision and subsequent merger of smaller proto-galaxies.
today, the Andromeda galaxy has satellite galaxies, with the two
best-known being m32 and m110. e Andromeda Galaxy has
a diameter of about 220,000 light years, making it the largest
member of our local Group of galaxies in extent, if not mass. e
milky way and Andromeda galaxies are expected to collide in
about 4 to 5 billion years, merging to form a giant galaxy. now,
that will be quite a sight!
I took this pic of the Andromeda Galaxy from my deck in
Redwood Shores with a DSlR camera attached to a 61mm
diameter refractor telescope. more information on these and other
pics are at my website www.thestarryknight.net. Clear skies!

Redwood LIFe evolve project updates
On tuesday August 31st, the Redwood lIFe team held a
community workshop for additional feedback on the proposed
redevelopment of the existing campus. Following a project
overview were breakout groups to discuss transportation, retail and
community space, and open space. Concerns about the size and
scope of the new campus/hotel/retail, traffic, parking nearby the
green spaces and maintenance of picnic areas were raised. many of
the proposed amenities didn’t seem particularly unique to
participants, as there are farmer’s markets, food trucks, sports courts,
a dog park and retail nearby.
As expressed in recent editions of e PIlOt, (please review
rsca.org/biotech for previous articles on this topic), the size,
scope and appropriateness of this project in a predominately
residential area makes little sense. e existing campus, which
currently houses and is drawing a good number of life science
companies, is attractive, minimal in terms of height and open.
Substantial renovations to the existing campus, including interior
office renovations conducive for the life science tenants along
with interior and exterior amenities, have already been
completed. is shows that the existing campus can be made
more desirable to attract life science and other tenants and also
include some open public spaces. to see the transformation of

Makerspace is almost Here!
On September 7, construction began on Redwood City Downtown library’s
makerspace. A makerspace is a free community workspace providing access
to technology and tools. kids, adults, and entrepreneurs will be able to create,
experiment, and collaborate in a hands-on learning environment.
Community members can use equipment such as:
• technology tools, including 3D printers, a laser cutter, digital design
and modeling software, with opportunities to learn about robotics and
electronics and create signs, small toys, prototypes, ornaments, etc.
• Sewing machines and handcrafting tools for creating masks, reusable
bags, jewelry, scrapbooks, knitted items, purses, etc.
• Hand tools, gardening tools, and art supplies for projects with leather,
painting, sculpting, silk-screening, book making, etc.
Shared collaboration spaces for adults will include reconfigurable
workshop tables and seating, white boards, large screen monitors, and a
space for videoconferencing, podcasts and audio recording.
e Redwood City library Foundation has raised $365,000 for the project
and the city donated $165,000. e Foundation needs less than $100,000
more for equipment and furnishings. Donate today to complete the
makerspace in time for a grand opening on December 2. you can also

we continue to make great progress on all fronts! work continues at the Receiving lift Station (RlS), which will ultimately

SPJv has started with the installation of the grit pumps and associated piping. ese grit pumps will be connected to the

from the incoming wastewater flow. Discharge flow from the Headcell will be pumped by the grit pumps through the new

and ultimately transport the resulting solids via a conveyor to a container for disposal. e organic matter and wastewater will
