Module 1

This document provides an overview of a module on quantitative research. It describes the learning targets which are to explain the significance of quantitative research, explore research opportunities, and differentiate variable types. It then discusses the meaning of research, differences between quantitative and qualitative research, and strengths and weaknesses of quantitative research. Finally, it covers variable types like independent and dependent variables, and scales of measurement for variables.

SMCM MODULES AND REINFORCEMENT TASKS (SMART) – PR2 G12

TOPIC: Nature of Inquiry and Research

MELC: describe characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses of quantitative research and
illustrates the importance of quantitative research across fields
LEARNING TARGETS: At the end of this module, I can:
1. explain the significance of conducting quantitative research in the in a context of a SHS;
2. explore different research opportunities in several areas of interest;
3. differentiate kinds of variables and their uses.
ICV/RV: Integrity: Expresses one’s self authentically, tactfully and unpretentiously
SOCIAL AWARENESS/JEEPGY/ JPIC: Environmental/ Ecological
ACROSS DISCIPLINE: Understanding Culture
BIBLE PASSAGE: May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and

strengthen you in every good deed and word. - 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

TAP Think and Play

Have you heard about the following lines? Put a check on the box where you mostly believe in..
A brief explanation would make your point clear. There is no wrong answer here but a simple
sharing of your ideas matters.

Situations Agree Disagree

1. Branded phones are more reliable

than low cost ones.

2. School’s environment cultured

standard among students.

3. Drinking milk makes bones stronger

and leads kids to be taller.

[Link] skills are inherited.

Are you convinced of your answers? _____ Given a time to do a simple survey would there be a
possibility that your answer may not be the same with them? _____ When can you say that your
answer is an acceptable one?_____________________________________________________
(2pts)

Yes, percentages of qualified respondents would generalize views of respondents here.

Simple survey questions are considered a simple research. Look at these concepts:
● Research is a scientific, experimental, or inductive manner of thinking (Baraceros,
2016).
● Research is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting
information in order to increase our understanding of a phenomenon about which
we are interested or concerned (Leedy & Ormrod, 2013)
● Practical research aims to discover truths about topics that interests or affects the
researcher(s) in order to improve.
The first bullet is the general meaning of research.
The second bullet gives us the words “systematic process” meaning step by step we will do;
a. collecting information
b. analyzing information
c. and, interpreting information
And based on the second meaning, why do we have to do such processes? Is it because we need
to systematically validate information? yes ____/no____ (2pts)
The third bullet goes down to those who are taking this course. Look more closely on this
meaning:

A creative process
Research is a systematic and objective creation of knowledge
- Creswell 2013
Works with a system or Unbiased, present
method all angels

Research has the ability to change the way we do things. Researches can generate new idea or
make recommendations to improve existing situations or realities. But the conduct of research
takes time.
See the difference between quantitative research and the qualitative research.

Quantitative Qualitative
Single reality Multiple realities
Establishing relationship and explaining cause Understanding situations in participants’
of correlation perspective
Pre-established design Emerging design

FIRST TERM 2
SMCM MODULES AND REINFORCEMENT TASKS (SMART) – PR2 G12
Detached researcher Immersed researcher
To generalize To assess applicability

Quantitative is simply based on facts to generalize procedure while Qualitative is based on

multiple realities as viewed by people in different situations. Statistical results are conclusive in
quantitative and factors as to why and how a certain phenomenon exists is for qualitative.

What do we expect from this course? What to expect? Are there positive and challenging areas in
Practical Research 2. Well, see this table of strengths and weaknesses.

Quantitative Research
Strengths Weaknesses
[Link] in numbers [Link] of numbers for total picture and
depth of analysis
2. Level of significance (statistical) can be 2. Less than 100% accuracy in sampling
determined – that results are not due to instrument construction and administration
chance alone
3. Sample is less prone to sampling bias 3. Rigor in doing quantitative research
procedure; instrumentations, data gathering,
valid choice of respondents.
4. Error can be computed, e.g., sampling error 4. Error in using the right procedure for
determining statistical significance results to
erroneous findings
5. Clear documentation of content application
of the survey instrument for validity check

TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Based on the table, indicate whether the simple interpretation below is TRUE of FALSE (5pts)
_____1. The objectivity of quantitative research is mostly guaranteed because it seeks answers to
questions supported by the analysis of quantitative data.
_____2. Numbers are precise and bias-proof.
_____3. Numbers will not be enough to explain everything.
_____4. The sample we get only scratches the surface of the entire people it represents.
_____5. Qualitative data will be needed to make meaning out of the numbers.

Now let’s talk about VARIABLES which are the foundation of quantitative research. Variables
vary and have values. VARIABLES are anything that can affect or change the result of study.
The one that causes change is the independent variable and the one that changed is the
dependent variable. Let’s take this title for example:
The Impact of Online Classes to Students’ Learning of SMCM

Variable 1 Variable 2

FIRST TERM 3
SMCM MODULES AND REINFORCEMENT TASKS (SMART) – PR2 G12
Which then from the two variables causes change (IV)? _________________ and which one
changes (DV)?___________________ (4pts)

Try identifying the independent variables and the dependent variables from the listed research
topic. Double underline the independent (IV) and box the dependent variable (DV).
A. The Effects of COVID-19 to Medical Practitioners in Manila
B. The Impact of Online Classes to Teachers Delivery of Instructions
C. The Relationship of Skeletal Framework to Family Expenditures
D. The Impact of community Lockdown to Small Business Enterprises
Let us move on to Classifying Variables according to Scales of Measure
[Link] scale is characterized by data that consist of names, labels, or categories only.
Example here is income, it can be categorized as 1) poverty level,2) low income,
3) middle class, and upper class
2. Ordinal scale involves data that may be arranged in some order but differences
between data values either cannot be determined or meaningless.
Here variables can be measured by assigning numbers as level of difficulty
Example: If online lesson turns out to be challenging, To whom will you ask help
From. Rate your answer from 1-3, where 3 is the most frequent.
Parents Classmates Teachers
3. Interval scale is data for which we can determine meaningful amounts of differences
between data. However there is no inherent zero starting point.
Example: At a given 2- hour time between 7-9 PM record the fluctuation of internet
Connectivity every 30 minute time
4. Ratio scale is the interval scale to include the inherent zero starting point. For these
values, differences and ratios are both meaningful.
Example: How many minutes can you stay reading online news
a. 3-10 mins. b. 4-10mins. c. 5-10mins. d. 6-10mins.

Which of these issues/topics can you relate well with? Write your choice below. (2pts)
