Preoperative Nursing Care for Fear

The patient expressed fear about undergoing cholecystectomy surgery, saying "Pwede naman sigurong gamutin nalang ano? Kahit wala nang surgery". The nurse assessed increased signs of fear including tension, avoidance, and increased vital signs. The short term nursing goal was for the patient to acknowledge and discuss fears in a healthy way, and display lessened fear after interventions including education, relaxation techniques, and encouraging contact with someone who had a similar experience. After 8 hours the patient met all goals by discussing fears appropriately and having normal vital signs.
