Module No. 1
Introduction to Earth Science
Lesson 1.1: Earth Science and Its Divisions
I. Module Pre-test
1. C 6. C
2. D 7. A
3. A 8. A
4. B 9. B
5. D 10. C
II. Learning Activities (Activating Prior Knowledge)
1. Geology— is the study of the Earth, the materials from which it is produced, their structure,
and the processes acting upon them.
2. Meteorology— deals with the study of the atmosphere and how its processes determine the
Earth’s weather and climate
3. Climatology— concerned with both the description of climate and the analysis of the causes
of climatic differences and changes and their practical consequences.
4. Oceanography— is the study of oceans, including the ocean's ancient history, its physical,
chemical and biological features, current condition, and its future, also includes the study of the
ocean's plants and animals and their interactions with the marine environment.
5. Environmental Science— deals with the study of living organisms and how they interact with
our environment
Lesson 1.2: Observation and Measurement
I. Learning Activities (Activating Prior Knowledge)
MAKE AN OBSERVATION
( all that can be observed
with our five senses )
FORM A QUESTION
( ask a question or
identify a problem )
HYPOTHESIS
( construct a hypothesis
or testable explanation )
PREDICTION
( make a prediction based
on the hypothesis )
TEST THE PREDICTION
( experiments )
ANALYSIS
( reflect on the results, use it as a
guide to our next steps )
HYPOTHESIS SUPPORTED HYPOTHESIS NOT SUPPORTED
SHARE RESULTS
II. Learning Probe (Analysis)
1. Were there instances wherein you used the scientific method in solving problems? What were the
results?
— yes, there were instances in a day to day basis wherein I used scientific method in solving problems,
unbeknownst to others all of us have already applied this method in our daily lives. The results being, an
answer to my question, a summary of the experiment’s outcomes and how those would match up to my
constructed hypothesis. In example, I’ve observed that I have lost my glasses, I would then probe myself
into asking where it might me, hypothesize and predict where I left it, test these predictions by checking
the possible areas, analyze, repeat the cycle until my hypothesis will be supported and share the
outcomes to my peers or family who I’ve asked about my previously missing glasses.
III. Learning Tasks (Application)
“The Importance of Earth Science”
What exactly is Earth Science? Well, based from my own interpretation of the focused topic in
this module, Earth Science from its name itself gives us an understanding of the Earth through the
different fields of science— where it came from, how it functions, the space, what the future holds for us
and so much more than that. This field can be divided into four main areas; astronomy, meteorology,
geology and oceanography. Astronomy being the oldest branch in Earth Science which deals with the
entire universe, it includes the study of stars, planets, galaxies and moons. Astronomers, explores the laws
of motion, gravity and how that controls the movement of the Earth and all other celestial objects to peer
back into time and better understand how we got here and where we’re going. It made inventions such
as (WLAN) Wireless Local Area Network, X-ray Observatory Technology, Gas Chromatograph and Gamma-
ray Spectrometer possible, as these were made initially developed for astronomy. Whereas Meteorology
deals with the Earth’s atmosphere, the thin fragile shell of gasses surrounding our planets, meteorologist
would explore everything from weather and climate patterns to global climate change, because of this
understanding, forecasting weather reports such as storms, tornadoes, tsunamis became achievable.
They also strive to understand how energy travels and is transformed through the air and water
surrounding the Earth.
Moreover, we have Geology, geologists study the solid Earth and how it changes from the surface
down to the core, they examine rocks and minerals, volcanoes and earthquakes, the oceans and various
land forms and landscapes. This is because it is important to be aware of the potential risks brought upon
geological events, it’s also been discussed that Geologists study Earth to understand the evolution of life
on Earth. Finally, we have Oceanography, which includes the study of the actual oceans themselves, the
organisms that live inside of them and the landscapes that border them, so called as our coastal
environment. In addition, Oceanography involves all of the other sciences just like physics, biology,
chemistry and geology. Each of the 4 main areas of this field highly contributes to the further development
of mankind and the world where we are moving in, which is Earth. I can say with my utmost confidence
that Earth Science is one of the major reasons why we have the things we have and how we’ve managed
to get ourselves to where we are now.
Because while our planet faces unprecedented challenges including overpopulation, pollution,
the depletion of natural resources and the unpredictable impacts of climate change. Earth Science holds
a new and an increasingly critical importance. It enables us to innovate and create more inventions, it has
improved our life, prevented mishaps or disasters, provided us with much needed information of what to
expect. After all, we can’t prepare for the challenges of the future without understanding how it came to
be and how we got to where we are today, and that is my take on the importance of Earth Science.
