ENGINEERING MATERIALS

At Texmaco, Heavy Engineering Work Division (Agarpara Works) we will focus on material selection for railway
bogies following the standards put out by Indian Railways.
The parts which have selected for Material testing are as follows:
 WEARING PLATE
 CENTRE PIECE
 CHANNEL
 TOP FLANGE FOR LOWER SP. BEAM
 BOTTOM FLANGE FOR LOWER SP BEAM
NAME OF MATERIAL USED FUNCTIONALITIES DIMENSIONS(mm) NUMBER/COACH
COMPONENT
WEARING IS:2062 Fe SHEARING 1.6(THK) * 10 * 250 2
PLATE 410Cu WC

CENTRE IS:2062 Fe SHEARING 2(THK) * 50 * 90 2

PIECE 410Cu WC

CHANNEL IRS M41-97 SHEARING/BENDING/DRLLING 5(THK) * 60 * 187 1

TOP FLANGE IRS M41-97 PROFILING/DRESSING/DRILLING 10(THK)* AS PER 4

Now let us take a look at the reason behind selection of the above materials for the said purposes:

Wearing Plate/Centre Piece/Bottom Flange for lower Sp. Beam: IS 2062 is India standard covers the requirements
of steel including micro-alloyed steel plates, strips, shapes and section. Suitable for welded, bolted and riveted
structures and for general engineering purposes with yield strength around 250 MPa and Tensile Strength around
410 Mpa.
Channel/ Top Flange for lower Sp. Beam: It is a standard material used in Indian railways with a Tensile Strength of
450 MPa and Yield Strength of 340 Mpa hence it is ideally suited for bending, drilling and shearing operations.
