SOCIETY SOCIAL PROBLEMS 2
Social problems are issues that have negative impacts on certain groups of people living
together. Societies worldwide are prone to certain factors that damage or affect them either
directly or indirectly, resulting in disasters. The social problems are always beyond the control of
one person. Mostly, individuals tend to involve themselves in issues that may result in social
problems due to ignorance of their consequences. The following is a list of social problems;
unemployment, poverty, drug abuse, social crimes, economic deprivation, political
discrimination, racism, and infrastructure shortages. However, social problems keep growing
from time to time since time immemorial.
Unemployment and poverty; when an individual has been looking for a job but cannot
find any at that specified time, they are in an unemployment crisis. Unemployment has become a
major problem in the current society due to several factors that limit the human labor force. As a
result, unemployment at higher rates leads individuals to fail to provide the required basic needs
for themselves end even their families. Many people languish in poverty because they can not get
a job to cater to their living expenses. However, poverty and unemployment do not affect
societies in the same way (Hanratty, 2017). In developed countries, communities tend to have
low unemployment rates and a minimal poverty level than societies the less developed countries.
The two social issues coincide hand in hand as one leads to the other.
Population growth and homelessness; natural resources have become overused and
limited due to the world's population's intense growth. (Schraven, 2016) thus outdoing the
available resources such as land. The global population is estimated to grow from the current 7.7
billion to 8.8 billion in 2030 (United Nations, 2019). The Habitat for Humanity records that a
quarter of the global population lack shelter, which is a basic need for human survival. As a

result, population growth, which causes stress on the available resources, forces several societies
to migrate to other countries as refugees, lest they die of hunger and starvation.
Shortages of infrastructure; basic systems of an organization such as health facilities,
transport, schools, and power supply are among the infrastructures that affect societies' wellbeing
when limited. According to the World Health Organization and the World Bank (2017), about
ninety-seven individuals worldwide suffer seeking health care. Shortages of transport systems
hinder people's movement from place to place, thus stagnating economic and social
developments. Education has become basic for the acquisition of knowledge worldwide; thus,
schools' shortages in several countries are a setback in terms of communities' social welfare.
However, the development rate is not equal worldwide; many governments are working on
improving their infrastructure.
Although there are some social problems, there are common social issues that affect
communities around the world. The most common of them are poverty, unemployment,
homelessness, overpopulation, and inadequate infrastructural systems. Governments and non-
government organizations have taken a few positive directions in solving social problems. The
possible solutions taken into account are; birth control programs to regulate population, creation
of employment opportunities, improving infrastructural development, and other social amenities.
(Bogoviz, Chernukhina, & Mezhova, 2018) Most of them all, raising awareness of these issues
through civic education is a big step in providing solutions.
