A set of 3 Trane Centrifugal Compressor Chillers are installed in parallel in Malaysia. Two Chillers are normally in
operation while the 3rd unit is in stand-by service.
Two - induced air, counter flow Cooling Water Towers are also installed in parallel, one for each of the operating
Chillers. In order to optimize the CWT service to each Chiller, their respective heat rejection loads must be calculated
since all related process calculations do not exist.

Basic Data is as follows:
1) The centrifugal compressors are Trane models CenTraVac CHVE 420; these machines are 3-stage models
with interstage economizer coolers. (as per Trane Manual downloaded from Trane website)
2) Evaporater duty = 400 Tons of refrigeration
3) Refrigerant employed = R-134a Sat'd. Press., psia
o
4) Liquid refrigerant temperature in evaporator = 42 F 51.7
o
5) Liquid refrigerant temperature out of condenser = 87 F 113.5
o
6) Cooling water temperature into refrigerant condenser = 82 F
o
7) Cooling water temperature out of refrigerant condenser = 85 F

Refrigerant vapor entering 1st Stage of compression = 27,768 lb/hr

Pressure of refrigerant vapor entering 1st Stage of compression = 51.7 psia
Pressure of refrigerant vapor entering water-cooled condenser = 116.5 psia
Overall compression ratio per machine = 2.25

Since interstage pressures are not known, assume all 3 compression stages are balanced as if each stage handles
the same compression ratio.

Compression ratio per stage (wheel) = 1.3110 Economizers' Saturated temp., oF

Heat and Material Balance around the two Economizers
The economizer are essentially nothing more than flash chambers. An overall heat balance is:

M 1 H 1 + M 4 h6 = M 1 h2 + M 4 H 4 M2,H2
M4,H4
M 1 (H 1 − h2 ) = M 4 (H 4 − h6 )

(H 1 − h2 )
M2,H3 2
M4 = M1

(H 4 − h6 ) M1,h2 M4,h6
M2,h4
Where,
M4 = The refrigerant stream exiting the condenser, lb/hr Inter-stage Economizers
M1 = The refrigerant stream exiting the 1st stage of compression, lb/hr
H1 = The enthalpy of the refrigerant discharged from the 1st stage of compression = ? Btu/lb
h2 = The enthalpy of the saturated refrigerant liquid in the 1st Economizer = 93.28 Btu/lb
H4 = The enthalpy of the saturated refrigerant vapor in the 2nd Economizer = 176.63 Btu/lb
h6 = The enthalpy of the saturated refrigerant liquid in the receiver = 104.34 Btu/lb

The compression within each stage takes place as an isentropic process (DS = 0); a summary of the thermodynamic
stream values is listed below (refer to attached Thermodynamic tables):

Temp. Press. Enthalpy Entropy

Process Stream o
F Btu/lb-oR
psia Btu/lb
1st Stage Suction 42 51.7 172.86 0.41209
1st Stage Discharge 59 67.8 175.37 0.41230
2nd Stage Suction 57 67.8 174.81 0.41122
2nd Stage Discharge 74 88.9 177.25 0.41129
3rd Stage Suction 72 88.9 176.79 0.41042
3rd Stage Discharge 89 113.5 179.09 0.41066

The refrigerant stream exiting the condenser = 31,534 lb/hr

Water-cooled condenser duty = 23,57,171 Btu/hr

Cooling water flow rate required by refrigerant condenser = 1,575 gpm

(The input data in the Yellow cells can be varied to generate different cooling water flow rate requirements. In this
manner, a range of values can be generated and a load cooling curve developed for the cooling tower)
