“Balintawak: The Cry of the Philippines revolution”
The “Cry of Balintawak” was the first Philippines revolution against Spanish regime.
The cry of pugad lawin or Balintawak was the most heroic event happened in the history of the
Philippines. Many of us still asking or wondering what really happen during the event of Philippines
revolution during late 1890s. How the Katipunan defend our motherland from Spanish colonial
government, the historic event was witnessed by many people around Andres Bonifacio, including the
leaders of Katipunan, Pio Valenzuela, his wife Gregorio de jesus, and Santiago Alvarez, a relatives of
Bonifacio’s wife. The agenda of the “Cry” is the thirst of the Filipinos for Independence from Spanish
regime.
According to the version of Pio Valenzuela, one of the leaders of the Katipunan, after the
outbreak of the revolution he abandoned the troops and fled to Manila and later on surrendered to Blanco
and was imprisoned at Fort Santiago, thus, he unsurely told to Francisco Olive, a Spanish investigator that
the revolution was held at Balintawak. Later on, he claimed that the “Cry” [Revolution] was held at
Pugad lawin. His version was the most controversial one. Another version Cry of Balintawak was by
Gregoria de Jesus, the wife of Supremo Andres Bonifacio which was considered as the “Lakambini ng
Katipunan”. According to her version she was the custodian of the secret documents, seal, and some
weapons of the Katipunan, and even risked her life for safeguarding them. She also claimed that the
revolution was occurred on August 25, 1896 near Caloocan. During the occurrence Gregoria was with her
parents in Caloocan while Bonifacio was with Katipuneros at Hills of balintawak for War of liberation.
Through her friends, she found out that the Spaniards were coming to arrest her she immediately fled on
the rice field of La Loma, with intention of returning to Manila. She joined her husband at Hills of
Balintawak and shared the hardship and sacrifices of a patriot’s life with him. Another version was by
Santiago Alvarez, relatives of Gregoria de Jesus, unlike the others Alvarez is not an eyewitness of the
historic event. however, he was in Cavite, near the Balintawak. He claimed that before the revolution, on
August 23, 1896 around 500 katipuneros gathered at Sampalukan called Bahay Toro, and on August 24,
1896 they were 1,000 Katipuneros along with the Supremo Andres Bonifacio gathered at big barn, after
they adjourned the meetings with the loud cries “Mabuhay ang mga Anak ng Bayan!” (Long live the sons
of the country). Since his version cannot be accepted as real but his version is very relevant to the historic
event.
Furthermore, we read a lot version of “Cry of Balintawak or Pugad Lawin” however the
revolution has the same aims, the independence of the Philippines from Spaniards colonization. The
sacrifices of our heroes should not be disrespected as we studied and learn different stories from our
history. The revolution taught us a lot, we should not let others oppress us and snatch our own land from
us. We should value what our heroes fought for us and protect our motherland from subjugator. This
heroic event will remain valuable for us and will never be forgotten.
