Introduction

Cancer is a vast category of diseases that can begin in practically any organ or tissue of the body
and spread to other organs when abnormal cells proliferate uncontrollably, invade adjacent
regions of the body, and/or move to other organs. According to the World Health Organization,
cancer is the second biggest cause of death worldwide, accounting for 9.6 million fatalities in
2018, or one in every six deaths. Men's cancers include lung, prostate, colorectal, stomach, and
liver cancer, whereas women's cancers include breast, colorectal, lung, cervical, and thyroid
cancer.

Globally, the cancer burden is increasing, putting enormous physical, emotional, and financial
strain on individuals, families, communities, and health systems. Many health systems in low-
and middle-income nations are unprepared to handle this burden, and many cancer patients
around the world lack timely access to high-quality diagnosis and treatment. Many types of
cancer survival rates are improving in countries with strong health systems, thanks to early
detection, quality treatment, and survivorship care.

Cancer fatalities may be avoided if significant risk factors were modified or avoided, and
existing evidence-based preventative methods were implemented. Early detection of cancer
and management of cancer patients can also help to lessen the cancer burden. Cancer
prevention is also the most cost-effective long-term strategy for cancer control.

Dra. Jhade Lotus Peneyra, Head of the Oncology Department at Our Lady of the Pillar Medical
Center, and Ms. Princess Leona Marie Ostan, Oncology Nurse at Mount Elizabeth Novena
Hospital in Singapore, will present this presentation, which will offer us with important
information on cancer prevention and early detection. This will help us realize the necessity of
having effective and supportive conversations regarding their health state, as well as
encouraging them to adopt positive health actions.

This program aims to raise cancer awareness so that people can detect the early signs and
symptoms of the disease and seek medical help at an early stage.

The presentation will take place in person in OLPMC's 8th Floor Auditorium, as well as online
via Google Meet. Because we are following the IATF's safety procedures, only a maximum of
40 people will be served physically, while the rest will be served online. Like our speaker, one
will be present physically, Dra. Penerya, while the other, Ms. Ostan, will be present virtually,
as she is based in Singapore. It will be a six-hour discussion, with three hours allotted to each
speaker and an hour set aside for lunch. Then, with snacks given, there will be an open
forum for questions and clarification. Prior to the start of the session, attendees will be given
handouts.
