Scenarios 1
1. You are alone with your dad when he complains of chest pain radiating to his left shoulder. He states he
is fine, but you know what to do. State what you would do in this scenario other than call 911.
a. He is most likely having a heart attack so while waiting for EMS he could chew an aspirin.
Aspirin is an anticoagulant, so this will prevent any more platelets from clumping up where the
blockage already is. If he becomes unconscious start CPR. If you have an AED in the house go
and get it.
2. You are babysitting and for a 6-month-old and 3-year-old one afternoon. The three-year-old shouts that
the baby ate his Lego. The baby is turning blue. State how you would handle this scenario if the baby
went unconscious during the evaluation.
a. Start with 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts when he is conscious, when he becomes unconscious
and active EMS then start CPR. Look for the object instead of giving breaths, do not perform a
blind finger sweep.
3. You are with your great-grandma and the rest of your family at a reunion. All of the sudden your
great-grandma drops to the ground and is not breathing and does not have a pulse. What precautions
would you take due to her age during CPR?
a. You should take precautions just like in any other situation where CPR is needed, though CPR on
elderly people can sometimes just cause more damage. Older bodies are physically weaker, so
they are less likely to recover from the CPR itself. Broken ribs, internal bleeding, and airway
damage can all happen if CPR is given in this case, and these can all contribute to an
unnecessary prolonged, and painful death.
