Lesson
Addition and Subtraction of
1 Decimal Numbers
We can categorize problem solving into two basic types: routine and non-routine. A
routine problem is a type of problem which there is an immediate solution. A non-
routine problem, on the other hand, is a problem which requires analysis and
insights into known principles of Mathematics. The purposes and the strategies used
for solving problems are different for each type.

In this lesson, you will be able to solve routine and non-routine problems involving
multiplication of decimals and mixed decimals including money using appropriate
problem-solving strategies.

Let’s start!

What’s In

Compute for the following. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper or
notebook.

1. 4.34 3. 6.43
x .32 x 0.20

2. 3.05 4. 2.61
x .45 x 3.46

5. 3.20 8. 1.40
x 6.28 x 0.01

6. 2.5 9. 8.56
x 0.1 X 100

3
7. 0.23 10. 0.16
x 10 X 0.1

Check your answer using the answer key. If your score is 9 or 10, you may
proceed to this module. If you get 8 correct answers or below, review your lessons in
multiplication of decimals.

Notes to the Teacher

This module prepares learners to develop their skill on

solving routine and non-routine problems involving multiplication
of decimals and mixed decimals including money using appropriate
problem-solving strategies.

4
What’s New

A. Arrange the following jumbled letters to form the correct words of the different
concepts in problem solving.

1. N P A L 6. P E R O T A N I O

2. N U R D E S A N D T 7. N M B E R U SNETNCEE

3. E L V S O 8. U L O S T O N I

4. N G I V E S C A F T 9. A K S D E

5. H C E C K 10. C P O M L T E E NASREW

B. Answer the following question:

1. What do you usually eat during recess time?

2. Do you buy your food in the canteen or you have brought it from home?

3. How much is your daily snack allowance?

4. Did you spend it all for snacks?

5. Why is it good to save a little amount from your baon?

6. For those who have not save anything yet, what are your plans?

5
What is It

MENU
Lugaw with egg ₱ 10.50
Sopas ₱ 12.00
Pansit Guisado ₱ 15.00
Palitaw ₱ 6.50
Champorado ₱ 9.50
Buko Juice ₱ 6.00
Sago with Gulaman ₱ 5.50

Here is a list of menu inside the canteen of Maligaya Elementary School.

Let us read these problems base from the menu chart above.

1. Lito bought 3 orders of lugaw with egg. How much will Lito pay in all?

2. Liza celebrates her birthday with her 4 friends. If she buys pansit
guisado for them, how much will Liza pay to the cashier?

3. Mrs. Reyes asked Maria to buy 12 orders of champorado in the school

canteen. How much money should Maria bring to buy the orders?

4. The principal asked the teachers to buy 20 orders of buko juice for the
laborers. How much will the principal pay for the juice?

Let’s now solve the first problem using Polya’s 4 steps

1. Understand the Problem

➢ What is asked?
The total amount of cost Lito will pay in all.
➢ What are the given facts?
3 orders of lugaw with egg, ₱10.50
2. Plan on how to solve the problem.
➢ What is the operation to be used?
Multiplication
➢ What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 10.50 x 3 ) = N
3. Solve the problem.
➢ Show the solution.
For the total amount of order Lito will pay:

6
1

₱ 10.50
x 3

₱ 31.50

4. Check and look back.

➢ Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 31.50 ÷ 3 = ₱ 10.50
➢ State the complete answer.
The total amount of cost Lito will pay in all is ₱ 10.50.

Let’s try solve the second word problem above.

1. Understand the Problem.

➢ What is asked?
The total amount of cost Liza will pay in
the cashier.
➢ What are the given facts?
₱ 15.00, 4 friends
2. Plan on how to solve the
problem.
➢ What is the operation to be
used?
multiplication
➢ What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 15.00 x 4 ) = N
3. Solve the problem.
➢ Show the solution.
For the total amount of order Liza will pay:
2

₱ 15.00
x 4

₱ 60.00
4. Check and look back.
➢ Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 60.00 ÷ 4 = ₱ 15.00
➢ State the complete answer.
The total amount of cost Liza will pay in the cashier is ₱ 60.00.

Next, let’s try to solve the third word problem.

7
1. Understand the Problem.
➢ What is asked?
The amount of money should Maria bring to buy the orders.
➢ What are the given facts?
₱ 9.50, 12 orders of champorado
2. Plan on how to solve the problem.
➢ What is the operation to be used?
multiplication
➢ What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 9.50 x 12 ) = N
3. Solve the problem.
➢ Show the solution.
For the total amount of money Maria will bring:
1

₱ 9.50
x 12

1900
+ 950

₱ 114.00

4. Check and look back.

➢ Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 114.00 ÷ 12 = ₱ 9.50
➢ State the complete answer.
The amount of money should Maria bring to buy the orders is ₱ 114.00.

Finally, let’s try to solve the last word problem.

1. Understand the Problem.

➢ What is asked?
The total amount of money will the principal pay for the juice.
➢ What are the given facts?
₱ 6.00, 20 orders of buko juice
2. Plan on how to solve the problem.
➢ What is the operation to be used?
multiplication
➢ What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 6.00 x 20 ) = N
3. Solve the problem.

8
➢ Show the solution.
For the total amount of money will the principal pay:
₱ 6.00
x 20

₱ 120.00

4. Check and look back.

➢ Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 120.00 ÷ 20 = ₱ 6.00
➢ State the complete answer.
The total amount of money will the principal pay for the juice is ₱ 120.00.

In solving word problems, we use the routine word problem to get the immediate
answer. On the other hand, we use the non-routine word problem to analyze and
gain more insights to the different principles in Mathematics. The purposes and the
strategies used for solving problems are different for each type.

Can you now solve math problems which involve multiplication of decimals? Do the
next activities to test the skills you have learned.
