Lesson Gravity and Friction
1 Keeping Things in Order
Introduction
This learning activity sheet was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to
help you understand how friction and gravity affect movements of different objects. The
scope of this learning activity sheet permits it to be used in many different learning
situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of learners. The
lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which
you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.
This learning activity sheet is about:
x Inferring how friction and gravity affect movements of different objects.
After going through this LAS, you are expected to:
x Infer how friction and gravity affect movements of different objects.

Key Concepts
Gravity and Mass
$Q\WKLQJWKDWJRHVXSXOWLPDWHO\JRHV
This is because Earth is exerting a strong attractive force on you and the things around you.
This force is called gravity.
Sir Isaac Newton was the scientist who discovered the principle of gravity. According
to the principle, everything in the universe, whether big or small, exerts gravity on other
things.
Gravity and Weight
The gravitational force exerted by the earth on an object is equivalent to the
REMHFW¶VZ eight. The greater mass an object has, the greater its weight. Heavier
objects like the blackboards in your classroom and the appliances in your house
ZHLJKPRUHWKDQOLJKWHUREMHFWVVXFKD
increased, the weight of objects in it will also increase.
Gravity and Distance
Gravity is a noncontact force. It acts between objects even if they are separated
and from each other. The farther two objects are from each other, the smaller the
gravitational pull will be between them. Astronauts in space stations and spacecraft
can float around and do the spacewalk. They are not weightless. They still have
weight, but since they are far from Earth, it is less than when they are on the ground.
Friction
Friction, unlike gravity, is a force between two bodies which are in contact
with each other. It stops an object from sliding against a surface or another object by
acting in the opposite direction of the sliding movement. Take for example, when you
hold a glass, you keep it from falling using the friction between your hand and the
glass. As long as you press your fingers around the glass tightly in a grip, the friction
will keep it in your hand.
Kinds of Friction
1. Rolling Friction is produced when an objects roll over a surface.
2. Sliding Friction is also called dry friction, occurs when two objects rub
against each other or slide against each other. Sliding friction is cause by
molecular adhesion between surfaces.
3. Fluid Friction is friction between moving objects and a liquid or between an
objects moving in the air.
4. Static Friction occurs in stationary objects or objects at rest.
Activities
Activity 1: True or False: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is
wrong.
1. Gravity is a contact force that acts between the two separate objects.
2. Gravity is the force exerted by the Earth which equivalent to the mass of an object.
3. Gravity on the Moon is less than the gravity on the earth.
4. Friction, unlike gravity, is a noncontact force.
5. Friction keeps object from sliding off surfaces.
6. The principle of gravity was discovered by Sir Isaac Newton.
7. Friction is the force that opposes the push of gravity objects.
\
8. The lesser the mass of an object, the greater the pull of gravity on it.
9. Gravity keeps anything from going up.
10. Gravitational pull between objects increases as the distance between decreases.
Activity 2:
A. Fill in the blanks: Use the words in the box to complete each statement.
gravity lesser higher
center increases less
1. All objects fall forward the ________________ of Earth.
2. All objects are attracted to each other because of ______________.
3. The farther you are from Earth, the ____________ your weight.
